Because they were a buy-game, A team in the Sun Belt… and just 10 years before that, they were in the Southland, an FCS league.
There are also no pro teams in San Marcos.
When we were rooting for Case Keenum and Aubrey Coleman, they (Texas State) were in a very low-level FCS program, and that wasn’t that long ago. Now, they’ll be in what’s arguably the 5th-best football conference and 6th-best in basketball.
To me, it will 100% change, it’s just a matter of how much. Texas produces too much top talent.
Gonzaga, SDSU, national powers - they’ll be playing in their arena every year. Boise State, Colorado State, Utah State, teams that regularly make the NCAA or NIT almost yearly, will be there every year. Even Oregon State and Washington State, known brands, will be in their arena every year.
That’s a completely different level. Their headliners used to be Sam Houston, Central Arkansas, Abilene Christian, McNeese State, UTSA.
As it stands, they regularly lose recruits to UL-Lafayette and UTA. They’ve had almost zero chance of landing a recruit with an A-10 offer, even within Texas - Competing with George Mason, Dayton, UMass? wasn’t realistic - That would instantly change. In the Pac-12, local recruits will now at least consider staying home as a real option
and once Texas State taste success in San Marcos, they’ll start to gain a cult-like following.
The Pac-12 seems to think the same. UTEP was the easy pick, but they chose Texas State.
