UNLV was invited but they turned them down because they were too far in debt to be able to pay the MWC exit fees
I’m sure UNLV is much better off financially collecting a pro-rata (or an even greater incentivized) share of the 5 MWC’s departing teams’ ~$90,000,000 in exit fees (and the PAC’s ~$55,000,000 in poaching fees) by staying in the MWC - as opposed to paying a MWC exit fee themselves…especially with such an uncertain media rights deal for the new PAC.
UNLV also gets a % of NCAA Tourney Hoop credits
& new MWC member entrance fees.
Only fully reported fee was N Illinois.
$2 million in 6 installments.
New MWC not looking great but OK short term for UNLV hoop.
2 bids most years ?
N Illinois is FB only.
UNLV should’ve done whatever they needed to do to go to the PAC…
The trip to Hawaii is the only enticing thing I see here…
Idk, being a consistent multi bid league will be tough imo. Obviously that lineup is worse than the P5 plus Pac. But even the AAC and A10 will be much better positioned to grab a 2nd team. It’s probably going to jockey with the WCC and MVC in the 9th-11th place range.
Before it was The PAC 12 it was The PAC 8. When they added Arizona and Az State it became PAC 10.
Utah and Colorado then made it PAC 12.
I’m penciling in GCU every year.
An NIL powerhouse in that MWC mix.
Just need 1 more.
Nevada, NM w recent good seasons.
UNLV not in NCAA since 2013.
No excuses now.
As I remember it.
If PAC $ is low after mediation.
UNLV/ AF have an out in the contract.
That would be wild.
GCU’s next at-large bid will be their first in program history. And yes there’s a couple programs in that lineup that have some history of success but it’s no different than the AAC, A10, WCC, etc. If the NCAAT does expand them getting two in consistently but if we’re staying at 68, there’s just not gonna be a lot of margin for error.
But honestly after looking at how these teams looked in the NET last year, I feel even worse about their prospects. There’s going to be quite a few potential NET land mines with that lineup. Using last year for instance you had: UTEP #157, SJSU #175, Wyoming #197, Hawaii #223, UC Davis #237, AF #323, NIU #354. And even Nevada, GCU, and UNLV were barely top 100. So not a ton of quality win opportunities either, js.
Heard from various podcasts.
GCU set for NIL on a low P4 level.
Even if that is not realistic.
I like them to step up.
Leave off NIU but still very, very grim.
NIU in Horizon next.
Edit:
Better than I thought.
Love CUSA weeknight FB.
The hoop is a tough watch.
Gotcha, yah its hard to track who’s all sports with how many moves there’s been lately lol
and once Texas State taste success in San Marcos, they’ll start to gain a cult-like following
Our fans are really excited for this to happen for them.
official
If this happens, it will be the first time they’ve ever done that in any conference. Their highest-attended football game was against UH in 2016. They’ve had some successful teams and played some teams that should have filled up their stadium over the years, but they’ve always had kind of a disinterested fan base.
I do expect this to give their basketball support a boost, but the starting point may be worst than our bad Hofheinz days, so they have a long way to go.
Baseball crowds have probably been better than basketball.
since joining D1(about 50years)
- theyve made the post season in basketball (nit/ncaa) 3 times … all were bad teams on autobids, who had 1st round exits - …
- they finished as conference champs in football 1 time (at the fcs level)… and just made their first ever bowl game last year
(theyve had some d2 football success , buts it d2, who cares)
I think when I said success, a lot of you took it as relative success compared to their conference mates. Like, oh, they’re above 500 in their league, or they Our top half in their league, no, I don’t mean relative success to their league, I mean the kind of success that draws you national attention, national success, top 25. The kind of success that would have you on the news or would have you good compared to the top brands in the country like University of Texas or University of Houston.
They’ve never tasted that kind of success ever. And I’m not sure how many of you have ever been to Texas State. They don’t care about sports as it is because they’ve never had success, but they are a very rowdy, very ruckus campus who loves to party. That energy could easily be converted to fan support for their sports.
And like I noted before, they are San Marcos, not Houston (There are things to do in Houston, unlike San Marcos.). This is the reason why I think they have a potential for cult-like following. A rowdy campus, with no other sports competition, with a huge alumni fan base, and three-hour drive from three of the biggest metros in the Texas.
Kyle buda is also growing like a weed, lot of people want to build a house with a “view of Austin”
Kyle and buda is our pasadena texas 1000%
I like how Hawaii is just an arrow
Utah thought they were too good for the Big 12
do they want to move back to the Pac?
Eh, I live nearby and have been to SWT/TxSt games over the years. A healthy number of their students go to UT games and hang out in Austin. Yeah, people get throw-up drunk at football tailgates, but that doesn’t really translate to a cult-like following. One of their big problems is that older alumni care even less than UH alumni.
They’ve been a bowl team the last two seasons for the first time ever. The attendance record against UH is kind of remarkable when you consider they AVERAGED about 18,000 per game that year. But I’ll give them credit for making big strides over the last couple of years, mainly because they’re finally trying.
We’ll see. The PAC sees upside, but they mostly see a live body to fill a spot that absolutely HAD to be filled. What happens when the current coach moves on and they have several consecutive mediocre seasons against random mountain and west coast time zone teams? Their football crowds don’t have deep roots, for sure.
And like I said, basketball absolutely has to get better. Literally nobody goes to those games.
Two questions
- How does the new Pac compare to the current American for a Texas school?
- What Texas schools have shown a cult like following for basketball?
