OT: UH brings back Ice Hockey. How is the market and FANBASE for hockey in Houston?

Arizona State and Alabama-Huntsville are real oddballs in the world of DI hockey.

ASU has Pac-12 money, though.

ASU has a 800 seat arena. They’re building one to be ready in 14 months for 5k people. They go to the Coyotes arena to play too.

Powers makes 250k

According to this, out of ALL the non Football/Basketball sports, hockey loses the least at 92k as of last season.

This doesn’t prove anything about Texas. just looked it up, found it interesting.

Is Houston still THE city for women’s gymnastics? I know the Karolyis were destroyed. But has another gym taken their place?

Is Houston THE gymnastics city? Sure it is. Just ask Simone Biles!!!

Yeah Simone is big and her gym in the woodlands will be big. But is Houston the city that all the girls gravitate towards, like they used to. All of the 1984 girls lived in the Champions area.

Are we still that city?

A pretty interesting read. The early years seem similar to the Soviet-East German model of developing gymnasts.

Maybe UH club hockey in fall 23.

Yep! Reached out with interest since it’s the return of the club. No experience needed

I would like to see the hockey jerseys.

We can barely field men’s sports. No way we are going to add Hockey.

UH may have some limited funds for clubs but the players/boosters/fundraising etc would fund it.
Club level hockey players are used to paying for ice, travel, etc.

The Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference has a real appeal for the UH fan even on the club level.

I didn’t even know they could keep water cold enough to play hockey in Houston in 1943…

This is awesome and I’ll support however I can. Hockey is probably the best sport to go watch in person.

There have been multiple attempts to get hockey going in Houston and they have all ultimately failed. That should tell you something about the interest in hockey. Yes, the hockey fans that moved down here from northern hockey hotbeds would probably like it and probably were most of the folks supporting it in previous attempts. But that is just my guess, I have no actual data on the Houston area hockey fans. I went to a couple of hockey games and it just didn’t appeal to me.

There’s a following for hockey and had it not been for the issues with the Toyota Center, we’d probably still have the Aeros. There are plenty of “ice palaces” for UH to have games, even for a club league. I’m for it.
