The writing was on the wall years ago when controversy and talking in circles about the same ol’ stuff became the ratings grabber. I’m assuming your mass group of listeners aren’t exactly ringing the intellectual bell if you know what I mean.
Charlie was pushed out years ago in favor of Josh Innis because he was a poor man’s Skip Bayless by saying outrageous things that people tuned in for and vehemently disagreed with him. And then they would bite hard on that bait by calling in and arguing with him.
The guy I hated the most was AJ Hoffman and people LOVED him. He was too stupid to be as cocky as he was. Maybe he was trolling too, but I really thought he was just a complete dumbass who thought his sh*t didn’t stink.
Local sports radio used to be decent in this town years ago but it’s a pile of crap. The Wheel House has done nothing by talk in circles about the Texans head coaching situation going on two weeks now. It’s just sh*tty radio all around.
Charlie was very good…not great because he was too cynical to be a radio personality. If he lightened up a little bit in that department then maybe he would last at one of our stations.
Its weird to me that Charlie never really meshed with a co host. They tried him with LZ for a while on 790 and it just didn’t fit for some reason. The only show I listen to with any regularity is John and LZ the rest especially 610 because I just need a break from all Texans all the time especially when football season is over.
And rich faded away on a three man show that made no sense
When they let those ex players on as guest hosts on established shows your basically putting the knife in your own back as their coming after your job
Now they bring back a guy who was let go and pair him with a female former newscaster (seen this concept before) hoping that’ll bring in a a few new listeners
But in reality ESPN radio is a weak signal - there’s a local station 92.5 who has the same programming also and I’ll cut it on sometimes as it’s a little stronger
Reality is also all these hosts are cut from the same cloth and all talk about the same thing only - but the program directors just keep making same mistakes

Best Houston sports radio show was in the late 80’s when Dan Patrick bought KSEV. He had Ed Fowler form the chron, Fran Blineberry, Mr. O’reily (can’t remember his name) matt thomas was the screener.
This was by far the best line up. I have listened to sports radio Nationwide not one show comes/came close to this lineup.
I know we Houstonians hate to give Dallas credit for anything, but the Ticket in Dallas blows away anything that Houston has ever had sports radio-wise. I still podcast them occasionally, even though I don’t care about Dallas sports.
Charlie was good, knowledgeable, and not an immature moron. I hate the “hot take” breed of sports talk that dominates these days. Matt Jackson was great when he was on the radio. Always did his homework, had solid stuff to say.
Like most of you, I rarely listen to local talk radio anymore.
Lack of diversity unless your a pro athlete (nfl) so the talk is always football and maybe some baseball
Same old content - pro sports only - what would it take to mention high school scores / local college, etc once in a while
Even the late hour shows they give the newbies follows the same things
Also no access to the pro coaches once the teams became mafia wannabes - Texans buy all the damn time on 610 for softball shows - remember when you could call and ask the coach a question on a Monday?

I am curious. Does anybody remembers these sports shows on KSEV? The three amigos segment was great. I believe it was on Friday’s. I would like to read some comments on it. First time caller…I will hang up and listen.
I always respected CP’s intelligence and sports knowledge, but my word he makes it hard to listen if your team isn’t doing well. Coogs weren’t great during the years I’d listen to him and if he brought them up I’d usually just change the station.
I go back to Anita Martini and Mike Edmonds days. Pallilo is one of the smarter and knowleglable sports radio hosts in Houston.
I will say a golden age for me was 1560 in the late '00s. Funny and smart and a little weird, certainly entertaining. Too bad they broke that whole crew up. Fortunately most stayed in town
