Anyone who feels he needs to address another as one of the worst takes to validate his opinion is pretty weak. And again, I don’t care what he knows nationally , about the Yankees or hockey. He was in a position and a need to know basis about Houston sports. Pallilo could not have told you anything about UH other than if they just won or lost or unless he bothered to go to a big event. He could talk about the Texans, Astros and Rockets to an extent but nothing with real depth. When the Astros were terrible all he could do is talk about how bad they were and and how could anyone want to call about them? He slammed the new ownership, ran down the entire rebuilding process and could not offer any discussion on how they were building one of the top farm systems in baseball.
One thing he could do is give quality and sensible analysis and takes on questions which should be the norm for so called experts but is quite the anomaly. I agree that overall he is probably the most rounded person we have had, which is still, in my opinion, an illustration of how bad sports talk has been. It is a little sad he keeps being replaced while some that are really bad have been retained for years.
One of the few I have actually enjoyed in tandem is John and Lance. They have good chemistry with some knowledge mixed with comedy.
I’ve listened to sports radio in different cities following Keenums teams. Houston is by far the worst and I’ve basically given up. I get the best info here on this board. I’m also bitter from the disrespect our programs have gotten over the years, especially during our 2011 football season. We had a guy having the greatest season a college qb has ever had and every single host said he would never make it in the nfl, and the only reason they could come up with was because he played for UH. I called in to Jacksons and LZs’ show back then and and asked them " if you don’t think we are any good then why is everyone trying to steal our coach?" they stammered on that one. I called in to Charlies show a few time over the years, he was always good to me. I even invited him to post on here some but he wouldn’t do it. I called in and ripped Thomas pretty good one day, that was fun. They kept telling me how stupid I was thinking Keenum was going to make it.
I have said that to myself many times when listening. How can these guys get away with the adolescent immaturity, ignorance and minutes at a time (being generous) off topic non sports related crap. Then there are times when the host decide what the topic of the day is and beat it to death and hours later the same thing. So many opportunities for the average sports fan to tune them off.
Doesn’t need to be a focus but a knowledge of the football and basketball teams should be a standard. The ability and willingness to encourage and hold a conversation.
This take is so far off base, I don’t know where to begin. I have known MT for 25 years. He is a die hard Coog. You just don’t get his schtick. Do you think MT would be doing UH basketball games on TV or Football pre-game on the radio if he was anti-Coog? Come on, use some common sense. He and his current Co-Host, Ross, who went to UT just like to needle each other about each other’s college of choice. It is all in jest and does not reflect their personal opinions on the schools. It is for entertainment value.
I never said he was anti- Coog …far from it…and yes he is a very proud Coog but deep down he probably believes his children deserve to go to a school better than the University of Houston.
I listen to him everyday…I listen to what he says.
My whole point is that we need to elevate the complete experience to a level that children of Alums would WANT to attend UH all on their own just like MANY other previous generations of XYZ school choose.
That just isn’t the case YET for our biggest supporters like MT or TF.
Case in point- he often mentions his youngest son is leaning Texas A&M because “there are Aggies in the family”
So the draw from Kingwood, Texas to College Station is greater because of what…influential family members or the environment at TAMU or maybe even his dad saying to rule out UH because of their lack of college experience…which just isn’t true.
I went from Spring, Texas to on campus living at UH and had an inside look at Houston and college life (Greek life, sports, social life) i never would have thought existed if I ruled out UH as an option .
I think Charlie is the most knowledgeable sports talk show host in this city. I also think he’s unpopular because he tells it like it is which is why I like him. That’s why you’ll never hear him on AM 610. They are nothing but a bunch of cheerleaders and understandably so. They are the Texans flagship station.
We FORCED pro sports on the big stations so there’s no choice in reality - the old days folks were knowledgeable and covered way make events. This market can easily handle more things to talk about but we let these outsiders come in and dictate this junk
A lot of the callers are college grads so they have no interest?
As for MT - he may be a loyal Coog but the ones living in the burbs like him ain’t pushing UH cause it’s like they chase the dreams of UT, A&M for the kids even though UH has put food on their tables
Those of you ragging on Matt Thomas have absolutely no clue. My son is being raised a proper Cougar. However, if the degree he wants is better served at another university, do you know what I’m going to do? I’m going to send him and pay for it. As a matter of fact, I might even encourage him to go somewhere else for school as long as it’s still in TX and public. It doesn’t make me less of a Cougar and it doesn’t make MT less of a Cougar.
That’s because you’ve fell for the narrative. There is a stigma that UH is for working class families only…that first generation college students , older students, foreign students, transfer students , minorities attend UH but NOT children of upper class families WITH options.
Both the politicians and the media WANT to continue that narrative. Senator Whitmire ADMITTED it.
It may be true that your child found a college with a degree plan that better fits his goals but you are delusional if you don’t think part of it is that you FEEL your child deserves to go to a university more aligned with children of upper middle class families. That YOU worked hard to earn that privilege for your child.
I’ve done a lot of thinking about this and I’ll only touch on the surface but there is a reason why wealthy families send their children to exclusive private schools…has as much to do with what they think they deserve from a similar student body standpoint as it does with the actual education.
People like MT just justify it when he has the power and platform to slowly change the narrative…he chose not to.
Stay in your lane , UH, you are not worthy of MY children .
Until we erase that stigma…we will be grouped in with the other city schools instead of striving to be another UCLA.
The stigma is in your head sir. I teach and coach in a suburban high school. It is now harder to get into UH than Texas A&M. The only public university in Texas harder to get acceptance than UH is Texas. We study this data in our faculty meetings I can only speak about MY students, and I teach kids who are in all AP and Dual Credit classes. There isn’t one kid who looks at UH as a safety school or last ditch option. Honestly, why do you care who or what sends its kids to UH? The campus is thriving right now and adding a Medical School. We’re in great shape.
And tell me about how we got the Medical School approved by the state? We had to promise to serve the poorer urban communities. There is always a narrative assigned to UH…even in the mission statement of our University
I hope you are right, that we are slowly changing the narrative. Once people like Senator Whitmire are out of office we can hopefully get rid of the old way of thinking.
And like I said…if one end of the spectrum is a city commuter school and the other is UCLA with TRADITIONAL students…let’s strive to be UCLA.
I am a second generation Cougar, a legacy btw.
My dad would tell me others would call UH, the University of Hanoi, because we accepted so many Vietnamese students while he was attending.
I’ll watch to see if we start accepting more suburban kids from upper middle class families that live on campus and want the college lifestyle…let’s see how we trend.
I care because traditional students have a higher ROI for the university…they are more connected. More net givers than net takers from a school spirit, alumni connection, and donation standpoint.
The overwhelming majority of previous generation of alums have ZERO connection in any area.
We need to change that.
The stigma is obvious to everyone but you…look around
