It sounds like the NCAA is going to advance the “5 for 5” rule but that it would not be retroactive (i.e., 4-year seniors who exhausted their eligibility this year under current rules would not be able to come back).
So no Uzan, but we may have Jojo, Dedan, Gillespie, and Hadnot for an additional season, if there’s mutual interest of course. Wonder how this will impact Alston’s decision. Also, Diane is expected to start in his sophomore year. If Jojo stays a 5th year that may impact Diane.
Lots of interesting consequences from this decision.
Players who have a strong NBA opportunity aren’t staying for a 5th year. 5th year is for guys who are fringe late second round and/or not on any draft boards. With that being said, Jojo won’t be here for a 5th year imo
There are couple of other changes worth noting that were approved by the Division I Board of Directors, related to transferring and tampering, that will be voted on in June.
I like the 5 year max rule, with the included exceptions. I think there should also be a max of 1 free transfer. After that, you have to sit for a year (unpaid?) which cuts into that time. Might promote kids staying in one place more and prevent the teams who are are buying new rosters yearly
1 free transfer after that you sit for a year. With exception if your head coach gets canned/moves jobs. I think that’s the only way something like that would ever get passed
