Unsubstantiated rumors are always welcome…especially if they’re positive. Negative facts are strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

We were almost there!

Well, Tim Duncan forwent the NBA and stayed in college for all 4 years, but that doesn’t seem to hurt him one bit nor does it make him a fool like some of the posters here try to suggest of players who don’t leave early for the NBA.

tim duncan payed college in 93-97… the landscape has changed drastically since…

zion himself said if he had a “real” choice he would have came back to duke one more year but “that isnt reality”

also the point was the everyone playing at a high major is thinking about pros, even if they stay all 4… not that staying all 4 is bad

Kellen said when we had him on this week that a big factor in Quentin coming to Houston was Armoni going pro early, opening up a spot in the lineup. Read into that what you will.

What point are you trying to get at? That we should sign the modern equivalent of Tim Duncan? If so, I’m in but question our ability to land a consensus #1 draft pick who stays with our program for four years.

If you don’t usually listen to the Pawdcast this week’s episode is a must-listen for hoops. Kellen gives thoughts on each newcomer.

The NBA draft doesn’t care as much about immediate skill set as it does marketability. They are going to break these kids and re-form them into their own image. 19 year old kids that can walk into the NBA like Moses Malone, Kobe, or LeBron are still a rarity.

The idea that four years of college makes anyone less capable of playing at that level is silly. Most of the kids that make rosters aren’t ready for that grind. But they have tremendous upside. And they’re signed to be like a mini farm system. Only a few are drafted to play quickly.

The one thing a four-year stint with degree indicates is that a kid will persevere and work towards a goal. The fans and GM’s might like freshmen and sophomores but I guarantee you the coaches like 4 and 5 year seniors.

I don’t think it has changed all that much since the days of Tim Duncan. There were plenty of players that left early for the NBA before and during that time. Players such as Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O’Neal, and Tracy McGrady were all drafted into the NBA about the same time as Tim. In fact, none of them even played a single game in college as they went to the NBA straight out of high school! On a side note, the Rockets’ own Gerald Green also left for the NBA straight out of high school!

Whether it is a good idea or not for kids to leave early for the NBA is up for debate. It all depends on their economic situation, personal beliefs, goals, and basketball development/skills. However, I don’t think staying in college after your freshman year and even all the way to your junior or senior year isn’t a bad idea like some people like to think.

I have even seen some people here who claimed that that would make NBA teams have negative opinions of the players who stay until their junior or senior year, I simply don’t agree with that. To me, it shows character in the part of the players. He values his education, wants to develop his skills, has loyalty to his school and coaches, and is patient enough to make sure everything is right before he goes after the money! And I don’t have a problem with the kids that want to leave early either, just don’t see anything wrong with the kids that don’t!
