I get why folks want Q on the Rockets, but personally I like not having to worry about Quentin and Armoni cannabalizing each other’s minutes.
Grimes is built for the NBA and he’s a perfect fit for NY. A step g athletic 6’5" guard with a quick release, shoots the 3, hustles and defends. No wonder Thibodeau “loves him”
so much. Thibodeau is all about defense.
All the more reason to limit his playing time.
Green will be fine…. Anyone calling him a bust is nuts…imo anyway.
I love Grimes but……
Christopher is really good and is going to be a stud so it’s not valid to say Rockets blew it….
I think they need to get Porter outta there ASAP before he goes mental again and blows all trade value.
“his effective field-goal percentage — which adjusts for 3-pointers being worth more than 2-pointers — is 57.2 percent.”
Correct they should not avoid a guy because he is local either, which is not what happened.
Does he have a legit chance at rookie of the year?
no…evan mobley already has that award locked up… and grimes is too in and out of the rotation to be considered
No n No
As Pes said, he doesn’t get consistent mins. Part of Knicks problem, too many changes from gm/gm on who’s in rotation on any given night. But that’s for another thread. Wanted Mobley for Rocketts
Little effort from the starters. Knicks horrible again.
"The former Knicks coach did have good things to say about one Knick — rookie Quentin Grimes, who also has a fan in coach Tom Thibodeau.
“He knows what he is,” Van Gundy said of Grimes, whom he called his “favorite Knick.”
“He’s a tremendous 3-point shooter and he can really, really guard. And he’s got toughness.”"
I like Josh Christopher and everything but I wish the Rockets would have gotten Grimes over him.
I love Q. Called him as a potential first rounder when draftniks were having him low second round or even undrafted. He’s going to have a long NBA career.
JC honestly looks like a really good pick and better for where the Rockets are at in their rebuild than Q would have been. His upside is a lot higher. Q would have been a great pick if the Rockets had a couple of franchise cornerstones already in place progressing in their development and were going to be ready to compete soon.
Now Green over Mobley…that’s a different story.
I also suspect that if the Rockets had drafted Grimes, Armoni Brooks may have been the odd man out since there’s a lot of overlap in the skillset, but Grimes does everything better. Nice not to have Coogs competing for the same spot.
i kinda disagree there…
grimes is not that old at 21 and can easily grow as well
i dont think JC is “bad” but none of the core players mesh… the building blocks of this team are Green, kpj, sengun and christopher…
all are ball dominant and require the ball in their hands, all are poor at catch and shoot … grimes, green, kpj makes more sense, the christopher, green and kpj
and i disagree on the “upside” comment…christopher has more upside as a off the dribble scorer. but that alone doesnt define upside… its like acting like Klay thompson isnt a high-value player
grimes defense and 3pt shootng are already nba level year 1-- his release looks to have even gooten quicker since last year

he has like 5-6 years to figure out the off the driible stuff - and he was a former PG, i dont think itll be iimpossible to drastically improve where he is at in that perspective
they picked up Garrison Mathews after the draft… i dont think they pick him up if grimes is the pick (does what grimes does), and armoni probably move up with 1 less guard in the lineup
At the end of the day Mobley and Grimes would’ve been a better draft by the Rockets… Period.
Klay is a couple of inches taller, one of the best 3 and D players in NBA history, and also found the right team to fit into. Grimes can of course grow his game more and probably will and I thought his potential as a secondary creator was undervalued going into the draft. But there’s definitely a reasonable ceiling on it, though sometimes guys can even break through their reasonable ceiling like Giannis (late growth spurt a big part of it) and Kawhi (became a completely different type of player than in college).
You can buy a Grimes in free agency for well under the max, even if you have to overpay a bit, which the Rockets can do when they are ready to compete. Where he has a ton of value right now is that for the next few years he’s a very productive NBA player on a cheap deal. You can also find guys who can fill that role at a little lower level through good scouting/luck like the Rockets have done with Mathews.
Christopher is a potential lock down defender and primary creator. That’s a lot harder to find.
I agree those guys don’t look like collective great fits right now, but the goal has to be to find cornerstones. None of those guys are sure things to be stars and I’d say right now that only Sengun is pretty close to certain to be a long term productive NBA player of that group.
If you really want to quibble with the selections, you could say that they should have taken Q over Garuba. But similar deal, taking a swing on an 18 year old with Draymond potential probably makes more sense than a 3 and D guy with a bit of secondary creator upside with where the rebuild is at.
Not sure about Grimes, y’all can quibble over that one. But I definitely wanted Mobley over Green. They already had brought in Porter. Didn’t need to take Green imo. Long road back to the Top, I do know that. Send Green out asap. Jmo.
grimes is a better defender than Christopher
and i agree that you can buy what grimes is “now” but that might not be the case based on what could be grimes developmental growth… grimes is doing great as a rookie,
the majority of Knicks fans are calling for grimes to play over kemba walker, evan fornier, and alec burks (burks and forrnier and veteran 3&d players)…as a rookie
and i think its the opposite…what Christopher is today is not harder to find that what grimes is today,… Christopher is an athletic ball dominant guard , who has scoring potential, but hasnt really put it together in college or the league yet, who needs to improve on his shooting… that is the description of every top 40 recruit that is guard every year …
proven rookie shooters, who are 6’5 linebackers with really quick releases imo are probably harder to find…
if Christopher reaches his potential sure, but the chances of him reaching his potential is questionable
