I’ve read about these projects before, maybe even in our area of Texas. No idea if there’s any collection activity locally, will have to look.
I remember in the 80’s, the Christie’s Restaurant on Bellaire used to use them to fill the potholes in the parking lot.
Edit: I looked it up.
They were also used as road material back in the day.

A couple of my neighbor’s driveways in West U back in the 1960’s plus the streets before my time.
You mean the Gulf of America.
Did you drive past my house today? On a related note, I’m looking for someone who can repair/replace a shee-itty driveway that is buckling with pieces of curb on either side breaking off.
According to my wife, our street was oyster shell until the 80s.
The street has been resurfaced many times since, but you still see oyster shell in our roadside ditches and at the edges of the pavement.
I also find oyster shells in the soil all the time, front and back yards.

Had a cross street at the intersection that was shell. The dust was brutal in the
summer if it didn’t rain.
We need to give a shout-out to the restaurants that participate in the Galveston Bay Oyster Shell Recycling Program. Glad to see UH alum Brooks Bassler’s BB’s Tex-Orleans participating. Now I’m getting hungry.

I wonder if others participate in a different program, because if not it seems like the overall recycling of the shells is a lot lower than the amount being discarded.
Would like to see a long extension of shells and cement to make a reef jutting out from the coast line just this side of Port Arthur/Beaumont area. Maybe a half mile long or so to filter water from Louisiana.
We better start eating more oysters on the half shell then.
I’ve been eating at BB’s since they first opened in Montrose but the last couple of times I’ve eaten at some of the other branches was not great…
