This is one reason why the venerable Rice/UH rivalry is a bunch of hokum. When I looked at my football feed this morning I counted 30 topics before I saw the name, “Rice.”
I know we like the convenience. I know we like the easy tailgating. The cost is low. But it’s not a rivalry in the visceral sense. It’s just two schools in the same city. I wouldn’t care if we never plsyed them again. They’ve always been a high risk/low reward opponent. But not a rivalry.
How much did we break down the UNLV team?
I hate Rice because I know the history going all the way back to our 1st scrimmage.
Incidentally I was looking at winsipedia yesterday and noticed we are tied all time with Baylor and tcu, and 18-16 all time against ttu. If this conference exists for very long rivalries will develop. Fights always seem to break out when we play ttu, but that’s just their fanbase I think.
… seeing now that we are also tied all time with Oklahoma State.
I’m not sure but I haven’t heard them referred as our rival for decades.
Do we know what uniforms the team will wear?
What school excites you viscerally that wouldn’t make us an 0-3 team after this weekend? At this point, winnable OOC game sounds great.
We even lost the title of the closest FBS schools to Georgia Tech and Georgia State.
TSU does not count because they are an FCS school.
When I was a student at UH, some of the profs definitely cared about the Rice game. These weren’t the type that you think would care about sports. I think there’s a school rivalry there, even if it isn’t primarily an athletic rivalry.
So we could reclaim the title of two closest “D1” schools if TSU moves up. Nice!
Back before we lost that distinction to Ga. State & Ga. Tech, I liked sharing this Google map with the 2.48 mile “as the crow flies” distance from Scott & Wheeler to Sunset & Main

More trivia — Whenever there’s money-saving talk of merging TSU & UH, someone points out the state reg. that says the older school retains its name. So we would become TSU !!
Rice is the same as my ex-wives.
- Don’t like em.
- Don’t care about em.
- Wouldn’t hurt my feelings if I never saw em again.
As with most rivalries, the lesser school wants the game. We are usually superior 9/10 in football and basketball, they were good for a while in baseball, their academics are superior, but they are nerds. (I grew up in W.U.) Fun to beat them and bring the Bayou Bucket home where it belongs.
I don’t consider them a rival. Kinda like UNT considers SMU a rival but the feeling isn’t mutual. However, UNT brings lots of fans to Ford Stadium. Rice has few fans.

I hate Rice because the last time we lost to them back to back I was a student at UH. And I attended both games. Embarrassing. Beat the nerds up Main!
That’s my point. Rivalries aren’t about protecting your record. They’re about hatred. But maybe you knew that already? We can play Rice from now til Doomsday but I won’t consider them a rival. Rivals are teams you want to lose every week. I don’t care enough about Rice that way.
I hate Memphis more than I hate Rice
I know we have a lot of transfers but I hope our players come out fired up because of last year.
