Several students were assaulted on campus this week, the university has put out a statement

I’m thinking UHPD doesn’t routinely book aggravated sexual assault cases , since the campus numbers overall are very low, compared to aTm. They could have failed to check the right boxes or provide the accepted evidence due to lack of experience booking these types of cases. Or HC intake
office could have just made a mistake too. My guess UHPD screwed up.

OTOH our system of justice allows many folks to bond out that makes me uncomfortable. But how long does it take to get these types of incidents to trial in a place like HC ?

On average, a sexual assault case might take anywhere from 6 months to several years to resolve. Many cases fall into the 1-2 year range, depending on whether they go to trial and how busy the court system is

Since Harris county averages 10 a day, we don’t have the jail resources to hold them all. Still, if a weapon is used , I’d hope they remain caged until trial or settlement.

I can tell you that the adult sexual assault cases that I either pleaded out or tried all took YEARS (literally) to resolve.

I have two set for trial this year, but they may not be reached, because they are behind child molester cases that have earlier offense dates and defendants still in jail. Both will likely be reset to later dates.

Its incredibly foolish for our system to let someone go who was on camera and has priors and a reason to arrest them. I cannot believe this. The University should be ashamed of how frequently this has happened and even after their statement. Beyond asinine.

Both IMO are at fault. School and D.A.'s office.
The UHPD has to clearly explain what and what they can not do.
This should open up some eyes…again at cost of human being scared for life.

On the news a girl mentioned shuttle rides to garages.

If the shuttle would go to the student’s car that would help.

Maybe at certain hrs this makes sense like esp after 10pm or 8pm when it’s less overall student traffic.

I dont think the shuttles/buses used by the school can fit inside the garages. You would need an entirely new system to provide this type of service.

In addition, students can call UH PD if they feel unsafe for a security escort.

What should have happened that didn’t happen per the university? Serious question

So was the dude the perp or did he simply look like a perp.

Fact that he was on camera earlier doesn’t mean he is the perp. Could be a case of let’s pin it on this fella. He fits the bill.

If he is indeed the is suspect then fry him , otherwise am suspecting shoddy police work here.

The new Harris County DA, Sean Teare, is a UH Law grad.

Has he said anything publicly about this?

There’s a lot of barking up the wrong tree going on here I think.

Based on all the previous incidents and not just the reasont ones is increment police surveillance or add cameras. Its not only unfortunate but weird that exactly after this happened there was another incident after the statement they put out stating effective immediately we would have more security at every corner. What??? You had more security and you still failed to protect the students?!?!
That shouldve been and should be the safest campus on earth with all the bad rep that it gets based on location. There should be a literal wall around campus of police.

I never felt unsafe there but i also grew up differently. As we all did.

If Johns Hopkins can have security at every corner, and that is literal, not figurative, then UH should be able to provide security in convenient locations.

Glad we’re soberly and rationally discussing this issue.

Whats your opinion

My opinion is that it seems people are suggesting solutions that are already in place.

Shuttles should go to garages! They already do.

Shuttles should take students right up to their cars if they can! Again, there’s an after hours service that does that.

More cameras are needed! The perpetrator in this instance was captured on and identified by camera footage.

etc. etc.

I’m going to leave it up to campus leaders and security professionals to figure out how to enhance campus safety. Meanwhile, since the stats seem to indicate that we’re at least tied as the second safest large campus in the state and until our stats indicate otherwise or fall outside the range of similar campuses nationwide, I’m not going to get caught up in a hysterical panic that we’re somehow worse or doing something uniquely wrong because of a case that’s getting outsized media attention.

Bad things happen and it is regrettable that they do. Our leaders must do everything that they practically can to enhance campus safety and I will wait for the reports and safety plans backed by data and facts to show what the path forward should be.

Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare admitted Friday the office “made mistakes in this case” and a breakdown of communication led to the release of the suspect in a sexual assault at the University of Houston.

Thank you for posting. The D.A. is basically accusing the UHPD. He/D.A. said that his department tried to reach the UHPD twice and could not therefore the “charges were dropped” Anybody with any common sense would find these explanations unacceptable. But isn’t it a snapshot of what Ryon mentioned earlier? This p.o.s. is still on the run or was he caught as of today?
Either way there is a rape victim scarred for life. She is the victim. Nobody should forget that.

Ok so I didn’t know they bring people to their cars with a special service.

What about a noise making beeper siren that students could wear on their belts issued by the school that sounds a universal loud sound that means help. It would immediately draw attention to the situation and it could be programmed with a location that tells campus police where the issue is. UH might need to have 50k of them but it would beat the cost of hiring a lot more police officers on campus. Policing is about reacting quickly to a crime spot and this would help them immediately go to the problem area.
