I agree, if SMU had a chance at Big 12 expansion it would require the Big 12 to expand at least to 24 schools and divine intervention. Still even little to no chance has to be better than an absolute no way.
It is still an IFâŠbut eben so, they would have built themselves up over in a decade in a way that is impossible if they remained in the AAC
No brainer.
Theyâll be back at AAC level when the ACC disintegratesâŠâŠwith ZERO TV dollars to show for it.
Folks here are conflating AAU standards with athletic standards.
The other schools are not voting you into AAU because you are âfriendsâ from the same athletic conference.
How many times can I say this. There are no friends. Only competition - athletics or academics.
Our President has stated EXACTLY what gets us into AAU.
Graduation Rates
Research at much greater level (Medical will help with that in part).
Money, with an emphasis on Money
Another billion dollars or so will put us on the right track.
Zero TV dollars isnât an issue for SMU.
SMU has a realistic chance at being successful in the ACC. I know you disagree, but given their location and future scheduling potential, they will see a jump in recruiting which means better on-field success which means more fan support, higher ticket sales, and more bowl games.
If they are able to capture the Dallas market competitively, then they will have a much higher chance of landing in one of the Power 3 conferences if the ACC does implode.
SMU bought their way in, but if they actually become a successful football program, then they will be rewarded in some capacity because they would probably draw more eyes than the bottom half of the ACC
The B1G is going to want at least 1 Texas school down the road.
The problem is Texas and Texas A&M captures the entire Houston market more than UH does. Therefore, we have to pray that UH continues to propel itself higher and higher in overall value. We must do everything possible to get AAU membership, and we have to get butts in seats and eyes on TVs.
Theyâre the next Wazzu.
Using your defense to UH + Big 12 argument, your wholevpremise is based on an assumption that may or may not happen.
Even IF 3-4 leave the ACC they could remain a P4 and backfill and remain on even footing with the Big 12.
Big 12 added FOUR G5sâŠthe ACC added ONE G5.
ACC schools leaving for the Big 12 is no longer a sure thing with this moveâŠthatâs why they did it!
The issue I think is whether the BMD go away if SMOO has a few losing seasons or doesnt perform up to donor expectations for 9 years. In addition, some of that money is probably in lieu of what they were already going to donate so SMoo is really only netting the difference.
100%
I was just rebutting the commenters claim that SMU secured itself a power conference spot in future realignment. Because I donât think anyone has unless youâre already a house hold name. Like you said, weâve gotta get those academic achievements and win games in sports. We also need to invest heavily in facilities etc.
For example, Kansas is trying by dumping a lot of money into the new stadium.
Only time will tell what happens in the future, but for now Iâm going to enjoy this ride in our new conference!
TCu, Baylor and tech all hot
Donât be so sure that SMU Canât become a power in the ACC.
They recruit better than a lot of P4âs including THE University of Houston.
itâs really about the moes and joes at the end of the day.
Has that recruiting ever resulted in a ranked finish at seasonâs end?
When it does, get back to me.
And even if it does, their brand size will be small enough to keep them out of the next realignment, once the big brands leave and the ACC disintegrates.
As I saidâŠ.Wazzu of the future.
Remember, despite being G5, UH has still had ranked finishes and even a NY6 victory.
SMU hasnât come close despite their ârecruiting.â
Iâll get back to you right now.
They beat us last year.
And now they are in a P4 conference.
Letâs not pretend itâs impossible that with better recruits theyâll compete and become relevant nationally.
They arenât going be bad just because you say they will. Give me a break.
What I find more interesting is SMU v UNC or Duke Or UVA in basketball. Those guys have to be disappointed.
And in the end, they lost their bowl and finished with a worse record.
Despite their ârecruiting.â
Ainât impressed.
Case closed.
You are talking about the past.
The deal was closed just yesterday.
Iâm talking about the future.
You are predicting that they will be trash based on their history in the AAC. They are now in the ACC with a completely different opportunity as we do.
The case isnât closed just yet.
I mean we have always shared a conference with them and they rarely out-recruited us. Not to mention we own them all time, and your whole argument relies on our recruiting never improving. Itâs SMU, at best they will be the Vanderbilt of the ACC.
I think SMU will be middling at best and hot garbage at worse. They have not been actually âgoodâ for a very long time. All this money did not help them much in the WAC, CUSA or AAC.
Our future in the Big 12 is far rosier.
I ainât SKEEERED of SMU.
I donât think that many people would rather we be in their position.
Iâm only comparing recruiting and anyone saying they would prefer to have less talented recruits is crazy.
If the ACC wasnât on shaky ground, I would prefer to be there. For me the travel would be great. Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State all within a 4.5 hr drive.
And I donât fear SMU. Just think this is a good opportunity for them.
