They haven’t had a ranked finish since the death penalty, and I don’t see them ever becoming a power.
Hell, Penn State and Baylor recovered from horrible scandals, so it obviously can be done…
But SMU hasn’t.
That should tell you something. They will NOT become a top ACC team. And when the conference disintegrates, certainly the B1G and SEC won’t take them. I hope that we won’t.
SMU to the B1G??? Get serious now. They aren’t AAU, and aren’t even R1.
Gentlemen the most important thing here is that there was more conference realignment and Memphis was still left out. Haha they must be stewing right now
Keep in mind, they aren’t getting TV money for 9 years, but they will share in the pool for bowl games, CFP, March madness (the ACC is no Big 12, but they aren’t bad).
You do know that they’re a rich school? It’s not like they were making much in the AAC anyways. If UH was in their position and turned down the ACC to stay in the AAC, I would be livid.
Clearly a good move for SMU. It’s kind of like they are betting on the futures market. They really had nothing to lose by making the move. I don’t like 'em, but they did the best thing they could do. It might come to almost nothing if the ACC breaks apart sooner rather than later, but at least they get some benefits in the short term, though not financially.
I would probably think that when accounting for travel costs, recruiting costs, general overhead costs for all sports, facilities costs with no TV revenue for the next decade or so it’ll be around 600-900 million dollars over that span. Not even mentioning NIL but if they can afford it then all the power to them.
They were making like 7 million in the AAC but the expense is a lot lower when you are going to be in a G5. Pezman mentioned this as well that the operating budget in the P5 is around 110 million a year.
