SMU in ACC

They do not get TV, they still get NCAA tourny money and other conference distributions. I expect ACC tourny money is a notable amount.

Agreed. BY will earn his $ over the next few years. He is going to need to find ways to drive a noticeable gap between Big 12 team earnings and ACC team earnings so when the ACC does lose a couple top teams then that gap widens wide enough that it reaches an amount such that Louisville, Pitt types will have no choice but to come over to the Big 12. Make $20M in the ACC or $40M in the Big 12 kinda thing.

All I’m saying is the ACC is NOT the Pac12. They have a competent commissioner for starters and a TV deal that goes until 2036 and not 2023, they arent alienating TV partners and they dont have a USC sabotaging their efforts successfully. FSU is basically a child banging on pots and pans while the grownups have headphones on.

ESPN basically had straight up told them they arent worth anymore money than what they are getting from their deal.

Compared to what the Tv deal their future counterparts will make and bring
 Thats nothing.

But i guess beggars cant be choosers.

Then you cross that bridge when it comes. There is no way that you forgo the ACC to stay in the AAC regardless.

Also the ACC GoR is modeled on the current Big 12 GoR which expires in 2025 and Brett Yormark (PBUH) had to move heaven and earth apparently to get the other schools to release Texas and Oklahoma a year early.

Bottom line: Smoo is in a stable conference until they can start making TV money

So, does The American replace SMU or do they do like when UConn left and not invite anyone?

Looking at Sun Belt
Texas State, South Alabama or Georgia Southern? I guess. Those are the biggest and bigger endowment ones. The pickings is kinda slim. CUSA is a no mans land for back filling anymore.

The ACC is full of run-of-the-mill football programs. Great academic schools, average football programs. Athletically, the top half of the conference is miles ahead of the bottom half.

SMU is located in both a great city and state for recruiting football players. All SMU has to do is sell their recruits on the fact that they’ll get to play schools like Clemson, FSU, UNC and possible Notre Dame on a yearly basis on national television.

SMU also has something that other schools don’t have: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Lastly - the reason Baylor and Penn recovered is because they’re in a P5 conference. Now that SMU is in a P5, it’s a threat to schools like TCU and Tech, and it’ll definitely be another team to worry about in Houston as well from a recruiting standpoint.

Who says money doesn’t buy everything.

Has SMU already paid the American exit fee? If not, I wouldn’t expect that conference to be too lenient on the price.

It can’t buy you love but it can sure get you into a P5.

First of all, they won’t play all those schools every year.

They’ll play maybe 1-3 every year, and the rest of their games will be against Wake Forest, BC, Syracuse, etc. that is to say, schools that have NO appeal to TX players.

That will NOT be more appealing than playing an SEC, B1G, or Big 12 schedule will be to a top TX recruit.

They’ll have no local rivals, and will play in inferior venues.

Sorry, but the ACC
.and SMU
.will NOT be particularly appealing to top TX recruits; certainly not more than a P3 school would be.

As far as money goes, our endowment may soon equal SMU’s, IF November’s referendum passes.

I ain’t skeeered.

How do you know they won’t be playing them? And I don’t mean play them all in the same season so-to-speak

That’s what I mean.

At the most, they’ll have maybe 1-2 marquee conference games every year, with the rest coming against teams that have NO local appeal.

That ISN’T a better “sell” to TX recruits that playing a SEC, B1G, or even a Big 12 schedule will be.

They more likely sniffed one than saw one. Especially 80s SMU.

I typed a response, but my WiFI went out for a second. Entire original post got deleted dang it

Basically, SMU being in the ACC is only going to benefit them in every vertical from recruiting to ticket sales. Even the non-marquee games are still worth watching.

Of course they can’t sell recruits over the SEC and B1G, nobody can, but the ACC isn’t that much of a leap up or down from the Big 12.

So SMU expects a 9 figure 5-year commitment from their billionaire daddies to keep the program afloat.

They may think this is going to work and make them viable but they are taking a major risk with this. Billionaires aren’t perpetually generous. And SMU is forgoing 9 years of distributions. Think Rutgers and their current problems but bigger.

Costs are going to pile up and it will make it very challenging for them to sustain this. SMU is a quasi power school now and i guess that is enough for their stakeholders.

It’s a pretty big leap down for a local recruit, actually, because they’ll have no local rivals.

And it’ll only get worse once FSU, Clemson, and UNC leave.

One reason I never wanted UH to go to the PAC is because I knew that local fans and recruits don’t give a crap about those teams.

It’ll be similar for SMU with the ACC.
