Lol, I was about to say they will just look at them popped collars in the mirror and be ok with themselves.
I donât think SMU, Cal or Stanford view joining the ACC as their end goal.
Everyone knows the ACC is going to eventually implode, but the goal is to try and set yourself up for when that day happens.
Cal and Stanford are probably still expecting to end up in the B1G when all is said and done. As for SMU, itâs uncertain, but they have a better shot at landing in one of the P3 conferences when that day comes especially if they become successful in the ACC.
Personally - Iâve always been an advocate for SMU to join the Big 12 just to restore Texas rivalries. It would be fun.
Edit: Even schools like Miami or Virginia know that the ACC will implode. The reason they want the 3 new schools is because it makes it harder for UNC, Clemson and FSU to leave.
SMoo paid as well to join the ACC lol⊠Wow!!!
Desperation.
AAC would take them back in a heartbeat
Next Summer.
How?
That GOR is as iron clad as it gets
FSU is trying to raise the money to leave as we speak. $120 million i think is the exit fee without going thru gor.
That equity raise isnât free.
$120 Million + legal fees isnât going to be cheap. JP Morgan is going to charge out the a$$ to help them out of the ACC.
Also - where are they going to go? The SEC doesnât really need FSU given they already have U of Florida, and FSU isnât really a good fit for the B1G at this moment. Perhaps in 5 to 10 years once they reach AAU membership, but I just donât see where they land immediately.
LAWâŠyou do realize UH to the PAC would have included 1- 2 other Texas schools and other Big 12 schoolsâŠdonât you?
We were never gong to be a Texas island like SMU.
This whole SMU situation is so shady and is only going to speed up the Power 2 thatâs coming. SEC and B10 are not going to put up with these G5 freeloaders in their Power club.
Now SMU and the ACC control Texas. Muhahahahahha.
Cal/Stanford/SMU joining the ACC is to have power to dictate who they build around with the leftovers of the ACC. They will try to force a nerd conference with Duke, Wake and BC. If SMU was picked up later they might be stuck forever with the likes of Memphis. Now they can be in the driving seat and make an Ivy of like minded schools. Yes Rice might join them down the line same with Tulane. But they can not exclude Memphis and ECU and UAB likes.
No, I donât.
And I wonât make that assumption either.
Given that the PAC had ALREADY said NO to Big 12 schools, including TX Big 12 schools, I do NOT think that that would necessarily be the case.
Sorry, but I think that the ACC scheduling âmagicâ only works for so long, and if the Marked-Down Ponies consistently get beat by their new conference mates, then the excitement of ACC membership will taper off.
But Iâm confident that SMU will go out and annually buy the best available athletes. (Some things never change.)
Looks like ACC believed that FSU, Clemson and UNC would leave the conference within 5 years on a ânegotiatedâ basis if Stanford,Cal, and SMU werent added. Thats probably the bigger story here. I still believe that the Grant of Rights would be and still is a major hurdle but the ACC clearly was foreseeing the three schools causing serious problems going forward. (i.e blocking needed legislation, leaking private meetings to the media, etc)
Adding more schools was 100% about keeping the conference together and will probably succeed in that regard, to the detriment of Stanford, Cal and SMU. Whether that conference includes the big 3 schools remains to be seen but it will probably have to include something truly earth shattering for that to happen and Iâm not talking about just $$$.
Cal and Stanford wanted to join the ACC because they wanted to maintain athletic relevance as well as be associated with schools that are academically prestigious.
SMU joined the ACC because they just simply want to be a Power 5 or 4 or 3 or whatever school.
Every single school in the ACC knows that conference isnât going to be around forever. The purpose is to set yourself up as an institution once that day of reckoning happens.
The SEC and B1G will get whoever they want, and the Big 12 will get the best of the leftovers. All the other schools will most likely be forced down to Group of 5, similar to Washington State and Oregon State.
Not only is SMU not getting any TV revenue, they gave all the ACC teams a $5,000,000 pay raise.
Thats crazy lol. Paying to be friends with them.
In 9 years ACC may just be a watered down conference.
Theyâll still make more in the ACC without TV money than they would in the American. Itâs a desperation to be sure but these are desperate times.
I mean i get it if they were going to a top 2 conference. But the ACC may be the 4th best conf. tops.
