If this is going to get serious spin, then I think some consideration should be thrown towards Saint Mary’s. They are a solid program and would only bolster the league’s basketball image.
The Gaels are nowhere close to the Zags’ level. Gonzaga has made the Elite Eight 5 times since 1999, and made the Championship game twice in the last six years. Saint Mary’s has made one Elite Eight in their history, and it was in 1959. They’re looking just a little spicy this year, but they certainly don’t merit a Basketball-only invite anywhere.

Not to mention them making the jump to the P6 will help them recruit better. After Texas and Oklahoma leave the B12 might as well go all in on being the best basketball conference by getting the Zags and Arizona lol

St. Mary’s will be indistinguishable from Santa Clara or Pepperdine 5 years after Bennett retires. It’s a tiny school with a tiny alumni base and fanbase and are in a congested pro sports market. All they have is that they’re usually good on the court but it’s gonna take more that to be anything more than a good WCC program. It remains to be seen if they can sustain what Bennett has built and, again, if you look at the profile of the school, that’s not nearly enough to make a major conference take a flyer on them.
Hell, it remains to be seen if Gonzaga can sustain what they’ve built beyond one coach.

Why would it help them in recruiting? They’re already recruiting lottery picks like Holmgren and Suggs. All a move to the Big 12 is gonna do is get them lost in the mix and degraded as a tiny PNW school that can’t compete with the bigger programs.

The Texas, Oklahoma situation
Texas and Oklahoma recently made an offer to the Big 12 and Fox to leave the league one year early for the SEC, sources told CBS Sports this week. It was rejected. The nature of the offer was not clear.
OUT may end up staying in the Big 12 for 2024-2025 and still have to pay the exit fee of $168M.
Because the 8 leftovers are splitting their revenue with the new 4 incomers, they are going to want the full exit fee amount from OUT.

Gonzaga might have trouble staying relevant after Few retires if they stay in the WCC. Unless they find a replacement. It’s hard though a new coach in a small conference. But they have built their brand and have had many NBA players and tournament success
