Steven Pearl has been terrible at Auburn. Most Auburn fans are not pleased.
Haven’t been a lot of Father, Son transitions that work out. Anyone somewhat concerned about the Kellen transition?
The key will be the staff. Whos in place when Kellen is head coach.
We all watch Kellen on the sideline. He doesnt have that same edge as his Dad. But, Kellen is a smart dude. Works really hard & emphasizes winning basketball. Im not concerned
I think there’s also something to be said about the sudden and seemingly manipulated manner in which Bruce Pearl retired and pushed his son into his spot, compared to Kellen being the head coach in waiting with plenty of time to be prepared.
There have been a number of father/son basketball coaches, but the only one I can think of where the son directly followed the father is Ray and Joey Meyer, at Depaul. Ray never won the NCAA Championship but he was genuinely a legend in Chicago, spending 42 years at Depaul. After Ray retired, Joey was promoted from assistant to head coach, and spent 13 years as Depaul head coach. Joey was successful, making the NCAA Tournament 7 out of his first 8 years as head coach.
He’s been coaching ever since he stopped playing and he’s been in an assistant coach role since 2010
In relation Steven pearl went into medical device sales after he finished playing in 2011 Was there for 3 years. Was hired on at Auburn in 2015 and by 2017 he was an assistant coach.
Kellen has been in some sort of coaching role whether as and grad assistant or assistant coach since 2008. That’s 18 years of experience compared to Steven who essentially go an assistant coach role after only 3 years of experience back in 2017
I had reservations earlier when it was announced that Kellen was coach in waiting.
I have none now. He has been a Coog since the Sampson’s got here and I now believe he is a great fit for this job.
My thoughts on this are; this isn’t a debate Kellen will be our next coach.
Since we cannot change that, instead of looking at the potential negatives, embrace that everything will go as you expect
There is a real possibility Kellen isn’t Kelvin and falls short, but it also a real possibility Kellen makes his own legacy in which he reaches even greater heights
Since we cannot control it why not just hope for the best. If you have no choice but to get on the next train instead of worrying about the possibility that the train crashes, why not just hope the train gets you to your destination?
Auburn had a lot of question marks this year even with Bruce Pearl returning. They were basically an entirely new team, with the only significant returner being Tahaad Pettiford. If you think continuity matters at all, that’s a big deal. I think looking at our current roster, it would be reasonable to entertain the possibility of something similar for the Coogs next year, regardless of who the coach is. Sort of just a scheduled rebuilding year. I think if CKS were to hang 'em up after this year, Kellen might get a little more slack for a bad season than if he stepped into a much better situation.
