I’m aware this topic has been discussed. What if the student section got moved to sections 129–134, right behind the visiting team? That’s the side the TV cameras face — so instead of showing the least-packed part of the stadium, they’d finally capture a loud, fired-up wall of UH students showing real Cougar pride.
The Spirit of Houston band would still be right next to them, keeping the energy and traditions strong. The visiting team’s guests could easily be moved just to the left of that area — still close, but freeing up the best spot for our students.
It would also make the stadium louder, no question. And honestly, it just makes more sense — even during homecoming, the crowning happened far away from the student section. Shouldn’t the students be center for moments like that?
With over 1,000 more students expected on campus in the next year and a half, the section’s only going to get bigger. I’m tired of the cameras facing the quietest side of the stadium — let’s put our loudest fans where they’ll be seen and heard.
I sat next to the student section which eventually filled up to about 85%. That should be seen on TV from the sidelines. While attendance was much lower than Tech, yesterdays game vibe was mostly good. It’s the student section and band that is the loudest. Student section also can boo the opposing team. lol
I’m pretty confident we aren’t ripping out seats and giving away donor seating to make things look some kind of way for TV.
If student demand was consistently sufficient, I think they could look at adding lower level sections up to the 20 yard lines, but they don’t usually fill all of their current sections.
Revenue is why. Regardless of whether season ticket holders show up or not, the revenue gets collected. The current student section is the equivalent of lower endzone bleacher seats, which is $225 a season ticket. The sections your proposing are:
129 $1,250
130 $875
131 $725
132 $425
133 $425
On the average the season ticket differential is greater than $500 between these sections and lower endzone. Relocating 2,000+ season ticket holders would likely be a $1M+ revenue hit, assuming they renewed after being bumped from sideline seats
Did you attend yesterday’s game? The student section was about 85% filled. That’s good. Prior to that, the Tech game was filled. It’s been pretty consistent all year.
Now compare that to the empty sections that show up on TV.
The visiting section side is scarce and that gets shown on TV.
Student housing hits over 10k in less than 2 years and the student section will need to get bigger.
The shots mostly on TV are from the visiting side like in this pic.
That’s a fair point — revenue definitely matters. But the move could actually help long-term revenue by improving national visibility and the in-game atmosphere. When the cameras show a packed, loud student section behind the visiting team, it makes TDECU look alive on TV — and that helps sell the UH brand, attract recruits, future students, and even potential season ticket buyers.
Right now, the cameras face the side with the least people — which doesn’t help perception or fan engagement. The student section brings the noise and energy, and moving them front and center would make the stadium louder, more electric, and more marketable.
And with over 1,000 more students expected on campus soon, the section’s only going to get bigger. That’s a chance to invest in future fans — the ones who’ll become the next generation of season ticket holders.
So while it might look like a short-term revenue hit, it could pay off big in long-term visibility, attendance, and school spirit.
Really? You’re going to use a picture coming out of halftime? People were still in line at concessions. Yeoman’s Hall was still packed with people from 128 (50 yard line). Do better
No it won’t. You’re living in make-believe land. I’m in 129. If I get forced to move, I will drop my tickets and watch from my recliner. That’s 4 seats ($5k/year) gone forever.
I know that. But even after you came back, it’s not as full. And I didn’t post this. This is what people see. You don’t like it? That’s beyond me our you and this is what people that are not coog fans are seeing.
