Texas rep. introduces FURRIES Act to prevent students from using litter boxes in schools

I just don’t have words anymore…

Texas representative trying to stop a problem that doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist in any of the many places it’s been rumored to be a problem over the last few years, but one political party continues to bring it up as a crisis that MUST BE STOPPED!!!

Where did we go wrong?

Especially when they can’t cite one school in Texas where it actually occurred.

The claim that a Texas school provided litter boxes for students who identified as cats is a hoax. This rumor was spread in 2021 and has been widely debunked by news outlets, fact-checking websites, and school officials. Various conservative and right-wing politicians and media personalities promoted this hoax as a reaction to school districts enacting protections for transgender students. No evidence supports the claim that any school, including those in Texas, ever provided litter boxes for students who identified as cats.

It never happened in Texas.

It never happened in Michigan. Or New Hampshire. Or Nebraska. Or Iowa. Or Quebec.

Please make it stop.

“… bans dressing up like an animal (such as by wearing tails, collars, ears or leashes) in schools, and bars hissing, meowing and other animallike tendencies. It also prohibits “surgical” interventions that would make a student appear more animallike.”

Sounds like it just bans furries which I am in full support of for the record.

It’s overreach for a problem that doesn’t exist. The litter box hoax is now driving legislation. We are in the dumbest timeline.

This will only take down the cute girls who wear kitty ears once in awhile. That’s it.

Stupid beyond belief.

Dress codes in public schools aren’t new. I got in trouble for wearing fuzzy house slippers in high school. If anything it’s redundant. But kids are extra weird these days so maybe it needs to be explicitly stated that furry costumes aren’t allowed. Sad really.

That’s not what this is about. This is about an internet hoax.

Huge waste of taxpayer time and money.

Embarassing.

The article says it bans dressing up in furry attire. Does the bill reference a litter box issue?

Yes. It’s all in this thread. It’s in the title of the article

" The bill, named after the “furry” subculture, which broadly refers to people with a particular interest in animal characters with humanlike qualities, bans dressing up like an animal (such as by wearing tails, collars, ears or leashes) in schools, and bars hissing, meowing and other animallike tendencies. It also prohibits “surgical” interventions that would make a student appear more animallike.

But according to some lawmakers, educators and members of the public, the act is seeking to solve problems that don’t actually exist — particularly when it comes to where students are, or are not, using the bathroom. Here’s what to know."

Bans dressing up like an animal. But according to some lawmakers it’s about something else.

It’s literally in the headline

Rep. Stan Gerdes, the bill’s author, claimed schools were providing litter boxes for students acting as “furries.”

Ok but the bill just bans dressing up like an animal in schools, per the article

The bill bans using litter boxes. It’s specifically in the bill.

Ok, one line.

Not sure how many lines need to be there. In any case, it’s addressed.

Whatever. Ban furries.

Just trying to clear up the confusion in the back and forth.

Personally, I don’t care if someone dresses like a cat. It’s odd but whatever. If it causes a disturbance, seems like something the school district should handle like the rest of the dress code.

I think we have bigger fish to fry in state government but some will disagree.
