Well, UT and aTm both mention each other in their fight songs, but my Dad said that OU is a bigger rival for the Horns.
Rice probably thinks we are their biggest rival. But we donât.
I mean, we might. Theyâre the only ones we play for a trophy, and itâs the only game on our schedule that has a name.
So far from true. The red river shootout has been played in Dallas (Arlington now) sine the 1930s, long before there was any thought of a Big 12.
No we donât.
Thatâs like ND v. Navy. A series so one sided that it cannot be viewed as a ârivalryâ in any sense of the word.
ND has played Navy more times than anyone, including USC. But guess what? ND hardly considers Navy a rival in the sense that it views USC as such.
Same for UH with regard to Rice.
A rivalry has to exist between two teams. When one claims rivalry and the other says âwhoâ, then it is just sad.
The Big 12 has a few big rivalries in some of the teams. For example:
Kansas St vs Kansas - played 122 times. Most played opponent for both schools
TCU vs Baylor - played 120 times (even with missing over 10 years of games with SWC breakup
Utah vs BYU - played 96 times for the Holy War.
Iowa St has played several teams here a very long time but they come second to the Kansas teams number against each other barely, but Iowa may be their biggest game (Not sure if Iowa sees it that way) Though they have played Kansas St over 100 games which is much higher than Iowa. However KSU may be their 1, but Iowa St is 2 on the KSU list by numbers played. I will let them figure out their emotional rivalries as I only have the numbers. (Our friendly Iowa St fan can probably clarify this much more accurately)
Oklahoma St would claim OU, but that is not both ways. Ok State has more ties with former Big 8 schools to their north, but Tech wants to claim OSU as a rival it seems. Tech did pass Colorado on the most games played list, but neither is in the top 4.
WVU has Pitt for over 100 games played, but they have played no in conference more than about 22 times (Cincy).
UCF is just too new. They have only played 2 teams in the conference more than 5 times. (UH leads at 11). No rivalries for them yet
UH can claim other Texas schools, but until there are meaningful games, no rivalry has developed. Though I do think Tech is the best match in the Big 12. UCF just kind of cool because I like the sapce angle. Until there are meaningful wins/losses for conference titles, major upsets, etc⊠WIll have to wait on development.
Techâs most played opponent in conference is BU (83 games) followed by TCU. Houston 35 games. Tech has common ties to BU with move to Big 12 and historical ties to TCU. More in common though with UH.
Cincy has Houston (30) and WVU (22) as most played in conference. WVU may see them as a rival but nothing compared to WVU-Pitt
Colorado has played the Kansas and Iowa schools a lot from Big 8, but they donât seem to be the rivals from the other schools standpoints as much. They may just be second choice to several schools. Always the Bridesmaid?
Navy has won almost 25% of the games since 2007âŠ
I suspect they wonât win again for a long time.
Iâd allow it, but it is not at KEFD very often. The B 57-Canberra on the other hand
I feel.like Cincy and Tech are our biggest rivals in the Big 12⊠30 games and 35 games is a pretty good sample size to build some good old-fashioned hate up.
I would not be against either as a rival. I would like to see UCF and Tech (not sure why UCF but probably my space background).
Either way there has to be meaningful games against them. Tech and UH fighting for a spot in the CCG would be good. Tech spending all this money to get knocked down by UH would be very satisfying.
Not sure if UCF or Cincy will be there soon for big games. Donât want to see UH fighting them for the basement spot.
Thereâs definitely history between UCF and UH⊠It could grow into a rivalry if weâre both in the Big 12 for the next 20 yearsâŠ
Our biggest rival is ourselves. For some reason we canât sustain success.
The record is more even than Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State, which Iâd certainly call a rivalry. It really only got noncompetitive around 2010, before which the series record was about as even as UT/A&M.
Which rivalry do you mean?
UH has won 74% of the Rice matchups.
Excluding ties, OU has won 75% of Okie State matchups.
Not a statistically significant difference.
ND has won 86% of Navy matchups excluding ties.
UH v Rice and ND v Navy are definitely NOT rivalries. Or at least, if you think Rice is a football rival, you may be one of the few Coogs that does. ND definitely doesnât view Navy as a rival.
Okie State v OU is like UT v aTm in this state. A bit different, records notwithstanding. State wide bragging rights tend to fire people up a bit more.
ND v Purdue is also a pretty one sided rivalry. But given that statewide bragging rights are at stake, it means a bit more.
To be fair though, excluding ties, ND has only won about 69% of those matchups. Itâs not quite AS one sided.
Perhaps the source I just quoted the numbers from was wrong. Somebody check my work.
All I know is every year I was on campus they sold Ruck Fice shirts when we played them⊠and the Bayou BucketâŠ
Yeah⊠probably not a rivalâŠ
Try as they might, the Rice v UH rival never took off with the fans. Inter-city rivalryâŠho hum. Letâs create a trophy so that the winner can have bragging rightsâŠMost non-Rice and UH fans couldnât even tell you who won last year. Competitive series? UH has a lopsided number of victories. Despite the convenience of the series, letâs semi-retire the series and play it every five years.
UCFâŠyuckâŠshould have invited Memphis instead
The problem with Rice is that most of the students there are not from Houston, not even from Texas, and have little interest and not a lot of alumni that live in Houston either.
That said, they are D-1 and is a very close home game for us here or there.
Interesting! My dad went to OU in the mid 60s and said the main rival was Nebraska.
