The Big 12 is going to make UCF our primary rival

I have to agree. TV brings the money so they want natural rivals and us playing baylor , tcu and tech would help the tv ratings.

That’s true in a vacuum, but assuming a setup with 3 protected rivals, which one of Baylor/TCU/Tech gives up one of their protected rivals to play UH?

Tech likes playing OK State and has played Baylor every year since they joined the SWC twenty years before we did. Their largest alumni base is in DFW (and they have the largest DFW alumni base of any school) so an annual matchup with TCU makes sense for both schools.

Baylor’s biggest rival is TCU, and they’re probably more excited than anyone else in the conference to play BYU. College football fans are already hyping up the Mormons vs. Baptists angle. That one is going to be an instant natural rivalry.

As I mentioned upthread, TCU would probably rather play us than BYU, but creating that matchup would either give BYU a rival in the Eastern time zone, which both schools would hate, or break up a long-standing Big 8 rivalry. Neither of those is particularly appetizing for the schools or the conference.

There’s also the question of who plays UCF and Cincy, if not us.

Personally, I’d rather have divisions; I think a TX/OK/UT ā€œSouthā€ division and a Big 8/EST ā€œNorthā€ division would make more sense from a matchup angle, but it seems like n protected rivalries is the format du jour lately. I think the XII is ok letting the other TX schools rotate on and off of our schedule regularly, and I don’t think any of them would object to that.

bro idk, this makes me happy just looking at it haha I can’t wait to never see Temple and the ECUs of the world again

BYU and TCU had some pretty heady games when they were in the MWC so im sure they wouldnt mind the reunion. I really dont care who they pair us with, eventually we’ll have a game so its all m’eh.

Id feel good about them trying to make a game of UH vs West Virginia. For some reason those Mountaineers despise us even though Holgy spurned them. Should be fun. Also, I’m sure Okie St hasnt forgotten us and the memorize of Case. I think were looking good.

I like most of the matchups for permanent rivals, but I do think they match UH with at least one Texas team. I would expect it to be Tech or Baylor more than TCU. TCU and BU are a given, TCU is the only potential rival BYU has based on past with the MWC, and Tech and TCU have a long history with TCU helping Tech into the SWC due to common history, but that may be ancient history. Tech TCU is a maybe. I do think Tech and UH would be a proper fit being the two public schools in Texas.

I would see UH with UCF before BYU. I don’t see BYU getting 3 Texas based schools, when so many other schools want Texas access from the old Big 8.

It looks like we already have a protected rival (albeit basketball) and it’s not any of those three schools.

With 3 protected rivals, you can guarantee the old Big 8 teams a game in Texas every year without protecting a particular matchup. I think BYU getting 3 TX schools would be weird, but Baylor and TCU feel like a given to me. Maybe we get UH-WVU and BYU-ISU instead? I don’t see that as a substantially better outcome.

We can all be sure the format of the Big 12 will be setup to maximize the TV contract. Houston will be in the thick of it and will not be a clear ā€œsideā€ piece. JMO

Well the article says that each school would play 5 teams twice(so 5 protected rivals) and 8 teams once. I would assume it would be the 4 texas schools plus UCF

One thing that did feel right to me about the basketball report is BYU-ISU. While going to Provo is a pain, BYU has some pretty big upsides in terms of national attention so a school like ISU could easily embrace that.

But yeah that doesn’t really help us, however great UH-WVU would be for me personally.

He quit as I recall. After we picked off a pass that he didnt even make much effort for he limped off and quit.

I can drive to WVU and Cincy in one day… I’m onboard…

Go Coogs!

Actually… Y’all are right…

How could UCF be our rival when they OWN us in football.

We might need to win some games against them for them to consider us a rival… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

UCF - one giant leap for mankind bowl

BYU - The annual cat fight

Baylor - The Art Briles bowl

West Virginia - The Dana Holgorsen Bowl

Kansas - The Don’t you wish it was a basketball game bowl.

Cincinnati - the chili versus barbecue bowl

Oklahoma State - the really bad haircut bowl

Kansas State - The Who Had the Better Bill bowl (snyder v yeoman)

Iowa State - the hurricane v cyclone bowl.

TCU - The didn’t we used to play each other and nobody cared bowl.

Tech - the I would love to come up with something snarky but you guys were the ones from the Big 12 that would play us so much respect bowl.

I will have to come up with sponsors now.

TCU - BU have played each other over 100 years or something crazy
TT - OSU are natural fits , second fiddles to UT & OU and both cow poke schools
UH- UCF are best leftovers to pair . Both large student Bodies, space connection, previous conferences together and both air flight accessible
Personally, I d like to play at OSU some , Great game day atmosphere, passionate fan base
Other than the Texas schools , UCF & BYU I don’t have many thoughts about it

I think UH v Cinci is an underrated rivalry. Especially in basketball, if Cinci can get back on track, but there’s a Houston/Cincinnati rivalry that goes back to older days like Oilers/Bengals AFC Central battles etc.

I’ll say it again for those in the back…

We might need to win some games against UCF for them to be our rival…

AAC FOOTBALL CHAMPS LIST

Anyone else here more excited to see what Houston, Cincinnati, Central Florida & BYU can do with P5 recruits, money, exoosure & resources than the 8 leftovers?

If Houston isn’t winning conference championships, i’ll be pulling for one of our 3 fellow additions to win.

Its been almost 30 years since the SWC.

I honestly don’t care who we play. If we build the football version of basketball where there is excellence but there isn’t any true ā€œrivalsā€. I am fine with it.

We will win in the Big 12 both on the hardwood and on the gridiron and the schools in the Big 12 will hate us for it. Good.
