The Game Day Experience (not the game)

As my first game with season tickets (and first in a long time live with the Cougars), I noticed many things both good and bad about my day. I think there were a few other posters who had their first visit back in a long time (or ever) and they may be able to add more.

Pregame outside stadium:
I expected more activity outside the stadium. There were several areas for specific groups, but little for a passer-by to just step into it seemed. I saw a student area that seemed for the greek organizations that was very active and lively. That was good to see and brought a nice energy to that area.

I did not see private tailgating just the big tent areas.

The biggest issue I think that I was very disappointed to see was the store fronts in the stadium garage empty. No restaurant and no UH apparel store (just a sign on a closed shop). Really made it feel like the school did not support the game.

Into the Stadium:
Did not like having to go through metal detectors. Bag checks I expected. Once inside about an hour before kickoff, I walked around and really liked seeing the stadium design. The open spaces allowed for a nice breeze. fairly easy access all the way around around the field on a walk around. I liked the view from the upper deck.

Overall a nice stadium, but does not feel like a college stadium with all the steel girders and little brick, a little highschoolish. The tile patterns on the upper deck walls needs to change. Add some red rectangles as all the brown and off-white look more like shower tiles, but a few red ones would pop nicely. More on this in a bit.

Do they know what a trash can is? I had to walk around awhile to find one. Eventually there was one off by the gate I got to.

Not a fan of cashless concessions, so only got one drink and skipped dinner until I left. This is at other schools too, so not just a UH thing.

Really liked the opening video before kickoff. Did not like the third down in the third ward phrase. But, I do think UH could really take off the urban feel more so. Really own it, as opposed to just kind of hinting at it. Going back to the stadium design, instead of just steel beams, bring in a more urban design. Houston has great murals and artwork all over the city. Bring in some of that in a quality way. Add some steel art work to highlight the skyscrapers and city look. That would give the base structure more story to the design as opposed to the “it was cheaper to build” look. Lots of potential that would not cost hundreds of millions, maybe not even 1 million.

Did not think I would like having the speakers all one one end behind me (I was in a corner of the lower bowl), but was pleasantly surprised at how well the sound worked without blasting me out.

Enjoyed the people in the stadium. Everyone I came a cross was friendly. Just need to convince a few more to come, but Houston has always been a fair weather fan base for all sports. Lots of red around me. I do think improving the game day experience will help get people to come, and more importantly, to return. More things outside the stadium, places to sit, things to eat, etc without having to be a member of a specific group.

Overall, lots of positives, but as always there is room to improve.

Thanks. I might add more as I think of it. Had fun even with the not so good outcome.

I will have to look around again for the next game.

This past one, I went from the Elgin garage past the blue lot in front of the Blaffer around 1:00. The blue lot was really empty. Then before I went in the stadium, I walked past the lot right in front of the stadium and it was also very empty. There might have been a scattered tent or two. Rain potential could also have been a factor I would think.

Is there a main lot that has the tailgaters in it?

Was the team store by taco cabana (formerly) closed last season too? I remember it being a mad house with people buying all kinds of stuff. Wanted a new hat yesterday, but didn’t want to go to the bookstore. Was disappointed to see it closed.

I believe we hired an NFL. Person for game day experience… that person has not done well. Time should be invested into studying other schools set-up and experience.

Template:

Pre-game:

amenities ? ( restaurants, shops, free entertainment)
Check-in process (time)
Student check-in process
Consolidated tailgating?

In-stadium:
Comfort? - unique to area: Houston heat : counter fans, water, ac areas, AWNINGS
Concession efficiency for ALL levels

Other:
Decor and photo op areas

We also just need to all show up bc it helps recruiting. If people don’t show them it hurts recruiting and slows how fast we get the results we want then your creating your own cyclical cycle of hurting recruiting then loses.

Show up and it helps and it’s all we can do as fans. The game day experience is still fun. It’s not the pros, the school needs us there. I watched the A&M game and they had 107000 after a historically bad loss. They regrouped as fans and showed up and won yesterday. They know not showing up hurts the recruiting and team.

What was the issue with getting folks into the stadium? We are in one of the party patios right by the band, about 5 minutes into the game, the entrance there looked to be backed up nearly to the garage. People were barely trickling in, was there an issue with the scanners? Finally when the rain started really coming down and the poor folks in that line were getting drenched, they just let them all in without scanning.

I think it’s the fact that a bulk of attendees enter through the same gate.

Seems to be a Houston sports theme to not try to enter until after a game starts. Be it Coogs, Texans, Astros, etc. Looked like a complete logjam from where I was sitting of people trying to get in after play started.

We are nothing close to A&M, our Alumni have not much connection to the school and could care less, hopefully that will change for the next generation of our students, but I doubt it as a large percentage of our students are international and don’t care about football

Know a man from Houston who would meet us at the games, he always showed up 10 minutes into the 1st quarter and left with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, win or lose.

Well people are tailgating and having fun before the game so that’s good. I think the new issue was that had scanning machines used this year where each person had to scan a ticket or their phone on their own then the girl or guy would help if needed. Yrs past they had the scanner guys and the workers would scan each.

My university has actually destroyed the game day atmosphere we had a Robinson.
