I disagree. That was one of my favorite things about Herman. Talk radio at that time bashed UH left and right and he didn’t back down. He stuck up for the school, unlike previous coaches.
He went on to defend his recruiting violation. Bad look. At the time i bought in to what he was selling, so i loved he was taking on local radio. But looking back this was about his Ego, not defending UH
Nah, he defended the school. All of those coaching rumors to other schools were a constant distraction that season and it was on purpose by those talk radio guys in order to derail the season that they were having. I remember something as small as Jerome Solomon mispronouncing TDECU Stadium by calling it “tudeku” repeatedly (it seemed on purpose)while interviewing Herman. Herman quickly corrected him. Coaches in the past always just took the crap that the media in this town did. I liked how he took this job seriously while he was here.
He did that a lot but the Kylie Allen phone call was not about defending UH. Lopez and Wright were calling out his contacting Allen illegally. That’s what he called in to challenge. That wasn’t defending UH, in fact the opposite
I don’t care. Lopez was always looking for a way to make UH look bad.
Whatever happened to “The Roach”?
God, I’m afraid to ask, but who was “The Roach”?
Solomon
Probably waiting on something to come to him. Kind of his MO
Untrue, he was constantly on the make for a new gig. He actually was looking for leverage when UT opened up. This is a quote that he said after the introductory meeting of his staff. They hopped into a van and hit several bars. At one on Fountainviewm he said “we have to hurry and turns this program around so when Texas fires Charlie Strong we are in a position to take over”.
All the while leading this program farther than any coach had done since probably Yeoman. And he did it to two seasons. Also, who knows if this story that you’re quoting is true or not. And it doesn’t matter. He wasn’t obligated to finish his career in Houston.
Fact
Doesn’t even matter. UH wasn’t a destination job. He remade the locker room and had a practice facility built and won a conference championship and Peach Bowl, beat OU and put UH at the center of college football.
I don’t think any school out of the top 20 programs are truly “destination programs”
The top 10 schools from each of the SEC/B1G will always be the destination
And then beyond that, if your goal is NFL then you go NFL
He put together a good coaching staff especially on defense, but didn’t recruit worth a sh!t and didn’t care. He knew he was a short timer.
Possibly the worst thing he did was leave us Apple Boy !!
Pyrrhic victory.
Apple Boy is all on Fertitta…Holgorsen, too (and partly on Pez with the ridiculous extension).
Forgot about that…but I did say ‘really crazy’
A “destination school” is whatever school will pay you most at that instant. Same with any other job.
Which is typically going to be the top 10-20 schools from the SEC/B1G
Even schools already in the P2 such as Iowa or Northwestern are not destination schools. They could have 1 or 2 good seasons, but if the job opens up at Ohio State, then it’s bye bye
