It’s a lot easier to build what Sampson did from a school rich with basketball history at the mid-major level than it is a football program. Herman left for one of the top 5 programs in the country.
He didn’t leave for Arkansas or Georgia Tech (although Law would convince you GT is on par with Ohio State). He left for Texas. That is the equivalent of trading in your Kia Optima for a Lambo but the dealer pays you to take the Lambo.
I agree with FMM. Herman got more publicity for UH than Levine, Briles, Sumlin, Applewhite, and Mr. “I’m not responsible for that” combined. And I recall he beat Florida State AND OU. CDH barely got by Rice last year.
Yea. I can’t stand Herman but he did loads better that some we’ve seen. I hate how he treated our boosters that gave him free stuff. But I love the memories
of what we did on the field. We still brag about our big wins with him. You have to put it all in context.
Yes what you saw was a Todd Orlando defense with multiple NFL talents playing their tails off.
The offense was bland and boring with the exception of him inheriting Ward to make enough plays and a take care of the ball.
The 2016 season was one of the biggest underachieving teams we have had. Played great for two big games and was much less prepared for the remainder of the schedule.
They were distracted all season by biased local media members like John Lopez (Aggie) who wanted him to leave UH for the success they were having, by daily tweeting him where he should go next. That stuff happens when you win Peach Bowls and beat Oklahoma.
Also, who had the ability to chose a great defensive coordinator like Orlando? Herman.
Who got the team to play as hard as any team as I have seen at UH? Herman. I personally know a player from that team who said Herman got them to play like that and he questions whether Dana will get that back.
EDIT: He also got an indoor facility and new locker room built and started the pregame tradition with the students and won with AAC players.
Law would never do any such thing, nor has he ever tried.
But he would convince you that they are a bigger football brand and have a better football history than, let’s say, Stanford.
The numbers don’t lie in that regard.
GaTech isn’t a bad place to be, given their location, history, market, etc.
And even if Herman left UH for GaTech, that would still have been considered a step up at the time, given that GaTech was a P5 and UH a G5.
Sorry, but it is what it is.
Now that we are P5, that would be considered at best a lateral move.
But yeah, I agree, UT, for all its underachievement. is still considered a Top Five or Top Six “blue blood” job in college football. Hardly a surprise CTH jumped, though he’s still a Judas for it.
It is my opinion that the likely explanation for those performances is that those two games had Herman’s full attention and focus. Why? Because they were essentially his application for the UT job.
The remainder of the schedule took a back seat to interviews, agent negotiations, etc. This tells us two things:
He has the ability (skillset) to be an elite college coach
He chose not to utilize his skillset fully unless it directly benefitted him
#2 is a character flaw. Those do not change. That is why I will always be opposed to Herman returning to represent my university at any point.
