also in regards to this part ā¦because wes is a bad coach, you are blaming player when you should be blaming coachā¦ sampson has given extremely high praise to both guards ā¦ a year 2 under sampson for jizzle and dayday (with sampson discipline and structure), pick any random 1 guard from the rest of your line upā¦ and a bunch of unknown random 3star freshmen guards for the benchā¦

Jizzle was crap and his breakdown was from his own doing, but sure just blame the coach for his poor shot selection and off court issues

- Coaches choose shot selection, Sampson railed Jwan shot selection when he first joined the program ā¦ it was a viral rant, about players thinking they are shooter when they arenāt and he chooses who can shoot what shot

Jizzle had like 6 social media breakdowns while he was at UC/ 1 after. do you think Sampson would allow even 1!!
Iām not saying jizzle doesnāt make a mistake at UHā¦ but where jizzle is at now he is at step 14, this isnāt an entry level breakdown
At UH with Sampson after that 1st step mistake, Samson would have started correction

Jizzle isnāt a winning player and either is Wes. Would Jizzle be better under Sampson? Sure. But also Jizzle grew up privileged, itās a lot harder to turn him into a dogā¦
Jizzle doesnāt attack the rim. Shoots too many mid range jumpers. And never draws fouls.
I donāt think him or Dayday should be paired together. They are both complimentary pieces to a start guard but neither are star guards.

Jizzle & dayday made a combined 41 shots at the rim last year.
Riley made 99, Collins made 88, Campbell made 163
Even if those numbers drop at the big 12 Level, itās still insane how much our new guys get to

On another noteā¦ Jizzle & dayday attempted a 100 combined free throws last season.

Campbell took 200

Itās gonna be a whole new style of basketball for UC.
Plus Houston could very much live at the line by too if Kevin allows it. They have some guys that draw fouls too!

I saw Tejada against the Coogs last yearā¦ Iām not sold that his game will step up to the B12 level.
Valid concern. But the difference isā¦ he wonāt be asked to be a star player at UC. He led Towson in scoring but is likely a 4th scoring option at UC.
And even against the coogs and being the guy they circled on the scouting report, he still
Managed 11 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.
He struggled from 3 that game though and went 1-7 which drove down his efficiency but he did go 4-7 from 2 on a very stingy from 2 Houston defense.
Houston did what it does well. Try & make life hell for your 1st and 2nd option. They both had inefficient games where as option 3 had 16.
I think players arenāt in a vacuum. If Tejada is asked to be a star in the big 12ā¦ then yea he is cooked. But thatās not the case

This is where we are so different in deciding the kind of guard we want.
I donāt like it when guards are overly reliant on getting to the foul line to score, especially when theyāre coming from a mid-major. To get those kind of shots, you normally need pure iso defense and then a player of similar size to be effective (61-6ā3 guards), which is normally common in the mid-major, but in the high-major that is extremely rare.
Almost all of big 12 run some sort of defense that prevents pure iso driving. Houston traps the post, Iowa State traps the post, half the Big 12 runs the no-middle. There is a lot of systems that prevent an iso drive, which is an essential element for high levels of foul drawing. And if you look at all our systems in the big 12, no one is just scoring through driving that is good.

This is only somewhat accurate. You need to stop acting like you know what happened, when you only THINK you know because you watched a couple of PSJ documentaries. Too many declarative statements from someone who is only guessing, regurgitating and surmising, my friend.
Again, some of us donāt need to repeat what we saw on a documentary or a Youtube interview. We were actually ALIVE and following UH basketball back then.
Rob had literally been the best player in the city since about his 9th or 10th grade years. He came to UH because of 2 things: Juice (his cousin) and because of the local guys (i.e. Micheaux and Bunce) who were coming with him. They all came up together at Fonde, McGregor Park, Godwin Park, etc. There was also another local kid whose name escapes me now, who was almost as good as Rob, who was supposed to be part of that class but didnāt make it that year and was never heard from again. But that was the class that laid the ground work for the next group (i.e. Young, Drexler, etc.)ā¦and then the next group (i.e. Dickens, Anders, Gettys, Olajuwon and Orsak (who was highly recruited, but ultimately not very impactful)). It wasnāt just Rob. It was GVLās apparent decision to refocus on LOCAL recruiting, beginning with Robās entire class, that lead to the PSJ era. Micheaux and Bunce were both high level hs players as well. Everyone who played and followed ball in the city knew who they were. Thatās what created the excitement.
āModernā? Nonsense. Again, youāre speaking as though you know wtf youāre talking about. You do not. Google Bob Gibbons (national) and Mike Kunstadt (local/state). They were the āmodern recruiting servicesā of the time, much like Joel Buchsbaum was for college football. Believe it or not, all of this stuff existed before you were born, young fella.
Mike Young was the unquestioned star of his group coming out of h.s. He, like Rob, actually got some national attention, which was tough to get as a bball player coming out of Houston at the time. The entire city of Houston (and Texas in general) was under-recruited for basketball at that time. And Drexler was more like a 2 star by todayās standards. No one came to Sterling to see his games. Lynden Rose was a jc transfer. Micheaux had several offers.

i discussed this earlier, gibbons was a scouting tool for coachesā¦ when i say modern recruting services, i mean perception changing outletsā¦ gibbons at its peak was only 5k subscribers most of whom were coachs
also drexler wouldnt have been a 2starā¦ modern recruting doesnt end your junior yearā¦ drexler was completely unknown till mid way his senior year ā¦ where he had a bunch of crazy games including like a 30pt 30rb game. he was a late bloomer, not a shot in the dark recruit

I still donāt understand what trapping the post has to do with this. Trapping the post will affect Allenspach & Hastings. Not Riley, Campbell or Collins.
They draw fouls by attacking either off the catch, off a screen or in iso. They donāt mind the help coming bc that is who will foul them. They attack the opponents body and force a foul. Houston had great defenders but it didnāt stop Jarron Cumberland from shooting 34 free throws in the last 3 games against Houston. Heās slow footed but still managed to draw fouls.
The reason I like guys who score at the rim and draw fouls is because they are less likely to experience poor scoring performances. Houston doesnāt score at the rim and doesnāt draw fouls, so when they canāt hit 3ās or mid range jumpers, they will struggle. Their defense has to save them.
Like Sampson is hosting a free coaches clinic. If it were any where near cincinnati Iād be there but Iād disregard everything he has to say about offense. It doesnāt attack the rim, it doesnāt draw fouls and allies too many mid range shots while drain so much clock with very little action off ball. But Iād pay real money for his clinic on defense, culture and identity.
Just bc Sampson coaches to not draw fouls or attack the rim doesnāt mean itās a good strategy.
I still think Houston would be the consistent best Tek in basketball if they had a better offensive mind on the staff. Itās the only thing they are missing
houston traps guards on the balls screen and penetrations
thats not true, the stats shows the overwhelming majority of the time on trap on a drive, the guard passes out of it or retreats on half court offense
again all the great āfoul drawersā their teams were terrible teams in the big 12ā¦there will be some opportunities like catching a defense off balance/scrambling, and getting occasional true isoā¦ but the defenseās mistakes dictate when you scoreā¦ great offense they themselves dictate when they score

your 3 guards that go to the line alot are 6ā2, 6ā3, and 6ā4, none particulary noted for strength
our trapping and physically shift you from your desired driving paths
the screenshots im getting these from, literally notes, you will not beat houston trying to attack the rim,
but from drawing the trap and getting the ball to shooters
again all the top teams in the big 12 are jacking up 3sā¦ its not a coincidence

Fact checking that all teams that drew a lot of fouls were bad teamsā¦ā¦
Arizona 11th in the country at drawing fouls. Only 2 players in the bottom of the rotation had a sub 30 foul rate
Iowa state was middle of the pack in foul rate but tipsey and Jefferson had 30 and over foul rates
Kansas had a not great team foul rate But Peterson was in the 50ās, white and Jackson were well over 40 in foul rate
TCU was middle of the pack but had 2 major contributors who had foul rates of 48!
BYUā¦ AJ, Saunders, wright and Kieta all had foul rates over 30
Ok st was top 70 in foul rate with guys all over the roster with high foul rates. Their issue was defense. They had a top 50 offense and a bad defense.
You donāt need your whole team to draw fouls but you need a few guards and wings that put pressure on the rim that can either draw fouls or get a bucket.
And itās not like that will be UC only offensive strategy. They have versatility which they didnāt have with Jizzle and dayday
