CBY after the bad call giving the Notre Dammers the win in the 1979 cotton bowl, “great throw and catch, would have been better if he had been in bounds-but that’s hard cheese!”. Here’s the newpaper version of the catch:
“With two seconds left, he called the same play again. This time, after Montana was nearly sacked, Haines made the diving catch as he was falling out of bounds in the right front corner of the end zone.”
Coach said later the guy was at least 5 yards off the field with the ref standing about 3’ away. But it was national TV and the Domes, who’s to argue with that?

I remember that one well. What wasn’t told afterward was that the UH coogs that went to that game Purposely stopped at 7-11’s on the way and got something to take with them-they refused to buy anything at the bowl concessions. HEH!

I remember that banner that was above the student section at SMU’s Moody Coliseum “welcoming” us.
It why, although I’ve really mellowed in a lot of ways when it comes to sports, I’ll always root against SMU

Too bad the television networks didn’t have the replay technology in ‘79 that they have today.
It would have been a much different outcome for UH in so many ways than merely winning the bowl game.
