We go through pitching coaches like bad football coaches go through coordinators. Hmmm…
Bragg Stockton was the pitching coach. Noble had his best years when he had Couch and Stockton as assistant coaches. I believe this is correct, but if I am wrong please correct.
Agreed…he wore that No. 85 proudly and for a reason !
I couldn’t find the assistant coaches during the key years of 1998 to 2003 when Nance, Sullivan and 1st team AA Crowell all played. Brad Lincoln’s top year was 2006. One thing that helped Noble was the massive Cougar Field renovation in 1995. Noble had back to back losing seasons in 2009-10 and then CTW arrived in 2010 from TCU.
This chat transcript in 2001 was kinda fun. At least we had a chat with the coach. [I note that the referenced nephew in Katy ended up playing at UTD.]
Bourne and Cho coming in along with Flores….not too bad.
Coach Whitting from ‘96-03 and Trip Couch from ‘95-00. Whitting was the hitting coach during most of that period but I don’t recall what Couch coached. Kirk Blount coached the pitching staff in ‘99 and ‘00. Somebody else will have to confirm but I thought there was an assistant that maybe coached the catchers.
Trip came back to work with Whitting.
- 2011-17: Houston, Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
Over the last couple years, he’s been at U of Arizona as an asst coach.
- 2002-10: MLB Arizona Diamondbacks, Scout
What HS pitcher made a significant role for UH this year? Who had a ERA below 10 in the conference season? Nobody, that’s who. They may stay and make an impact down the road, but not in their first year. That is why they are going exclusively to the portal. The same bodes for players all across the country. This isn’t a UH policy. This is what is happening all over college baseball.
Baller, we had a couple that damn well should have but for whatever the reason they did not develop AT ALL.
I would say, there was even regression from high school and that is downright pathetic on the coaching staff.
Alex Solis-Electrict arm with closer traits
Diego Luzardo- One of the top HS pitchers last year, more than enough talent to have really helped the team.
With even adequate coaching there are freshman all over the country that are successful.
Been that way for years……
You can’t equate electric arms with collegiate production. Solis and Lazaro have great arms and are great pro prospects but that doesn’t mean they are going to be great pitchers on the collegiate level. That is being proven all over the country. Coaches aren’t willing to put in the work to develop pitchers when they can just recruit over them and bring in some pitchers from the portal.
And, I don’t know who is advising those two players, but to send them to the Houston Collegiate League is an absolute joke!!! Probably one of the worst leagues in the country.
So you’re saying that because our terrible program didn’t have any pitchers who contributed as freshmen, no freshmen pitchers can contribute at the collegiate level?
Dude.
I don’t know of any UH players that are playing in the Houston Collegiate League. But maybe there’s someone I’m unaware of.
Solis, Roman, Walker, Lazardo and Russell. They are all scheduled to be in the collegiate league.
I am saying that UH, like most programs in the D1, have decided to go with Portal players with experience over HS kids.
You are missing my point.
The talent is there and with decent , not even great coaching those two guys would have been very effective.
I don’t care if someone is a freshman or a transfer….they all need to be developed.
By your rationale anyone from the portal must be better than any true freshman just because they are older/more experience.
Not trying to be rude baller but your theory is flat wrong.
I do agree that playing locally this summer is garbage.
Both those guys are good enough for one of the top 3-4 summer ball leagues.
Why in the world would TW be satisfied with them staying home? Makes zero sense.
Of course it’s great if you can pick up a few “polished” arms in the portal….but when you are entirely dependent on just portal guys then you are a sh-tty , lazy coach.
You should be developing a minimum of 3-4 freshman arms every year.
I am not saying that is right. Should they have been better, absolutely. They have great stuff, but they weren’t developed. That is what is missing in a large amount of college programs. They don’t really want a guy with great stuff, who is going to be a FR. They want guys who will produce right away. If you don’t believe me then look at all the stats for pitchers across the country. There are a minimal amount of FR pitchers making an impact in the game, and it is going down year after year.
The Texas Collegiate League. HCL appears to be defunct.
The TCL is not top tier, but it looks like it’s a well organized / well run league. Lots of JUCO guys. Lots of guys guys from lower D1s and lower divisions.
Not everyone can go to the Cape or the Northwoods.
It’s the same league, they just changed the name. And i know all of the leagues. Those two pitchers should not be playing locally. That is ridiculous!
