TT QB Brendan Sorsby Gambling Issues

They would have to go get a grad transfer if they don’t go after someone who is already in the portal, but they’re probably not going to do that.
Edit: I was wrong about grad transfers - they are now subject to the same window as others, as of this year.

They’re going use resources to try to minimize the suspension, I imagine.

That sounds right, but again, I can’t imagine that there are too many grad transfers remaining out there in the portal that would be such high value prospects.

Top QBs in the portal are usually snatched up pretty quickly, right?

There are some guys still in the portal that could be serviceable enough to provide experience in the event that Hammond isn’t ready to start the season and they don’t want to go with the RS-FR. These aren’t front-line guys, but as they say, “that ship has sailed.” :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve read that Sorsby has hired the attorney who represented Bill Self vs the FBI investigation (Scott Tompsett) and another dude who has had success against the NFL, NASCAR and the NCAA (Jeffrey Kessler). It wouldn’t shock me to find out that there were communications with the NCAA before this “leave of absence” was announced and that the door is cracked for something less than a full season’s suspension.

Again though, even if they aren’t in the portal, how many really good ones would still be available out on the market?

Seems to me that top QBs interested in continuing to play in college would be among the first people to advertise their services and the first ones snatched up, but I suppose I could be off on that.

They aren’t getting a “top” QB at this stage of the game, but they don’t really need that. They have Hammond probably coming back by week 3, a transfer from Tulsa, and at least one RS-FR who saw action last year.

There was actually a rule change on grad transfers for this year, and I think they do have to be in the portal at the same time as other transfers, so it’s kind of a moot point in that respect.

I didn’t realize that Tech’s 3rd string guy from last year transferred to East Carolina in January.

Still though, that takes us back to where we were. Few teams have enough depth to be really good with their third string QB.

About the only time I remember a team being like that was the year that Ohio State won the natty under Urban Meyer with Herman as the OC. They won with a 3rd stringer, right? I think that was 2014, but that was a really unusual exception.

Most teams have a pretty big drop off just from #1 to #2. #3 is usually considered a bit of a last resort.

Their two red shirt freshmen quarterbacks played last year. They also have a former starter for Tulsa. I doubt there is much left in the portal that work be any better than what they have. They have all been thru spring practice.

I guess they should hope that they will be 2014 Ohio State redux.

Care to explain? “The ncaa never tried to enforce the rules” If this was not true ALL blue bloods would have gotten the probations that we did. They all cheated just like we did. We got punished. They did not. It is 100% documented when uta got caught for the same infringements that we committed. They got a slap on the wrist and we almost got the death penalty.

You might want to look up the definition of the word never.

Ncaa sanctions toward uta vs ours were clearly done with an intent to protect them and purposely damage us to the highest degree short of the death penalty.

If he genuinely has gambling issues, I do feel sorry for him and will pray for him. It’s easy to cast stones if a person has been fortunate enough to never have had an issue. I’ve seen it ruin families and lives.

However, (and I hate to assume intent) if he had it made at Cincy then decided to leave for more money, that doesn’t help the optics of his situation. Especially if he was gambling prior to his jump from IU > UC > TTU. He’s sending the message that he has a greed issue, and gambling and its addiction is just a byproduct.

I am also one of those people with a very strong opinion on gambling. I believe it has no place in collegiate sports. What good can truly come from it? A couple dollars?

I look for the NCAA to look into the Sorsby issue and to put Tech’s equipment guy on probation for a month.

Tech is not who they think they are.

Sorsby and tech are cooked!!

How much was he betting? If all he was doing was making 15 dollar bets that hardly indicates a problem. If he was betting money he couldn’t afford to lose then that’s a different story. Going to rehab for a bunch of 15 dollar bets smells like he got caught and needs to clean up his past so he can go pro. But if he has a true problem then I hope he gets the help he needs.

Since Sorsby never played a down for Tech, the only issue for Tech is replacement.

If Cincy knew about this, they are the ones that have problems.

What I’ve seen is that he was making 20 bets a day at one point, and bet a total of at least $10K.

That indicates a “problem” to people who will determine his future.

He placed 10,000-plus wagers over four (4) years, with a total value of less than seven figures.

That’s an issue, that’s a problem

I have an Aggie coworker who drove to Louisiana the night before our game to bet on us and other games. She did this on a work day.
