TV Series

I respectfully disagree…and the ratings seem to suggest that many others do as well.

The ratings suggest what? That people like trash TV? You’re correct, they do.

If that’s what you like then good on you……but don’t sit here and with a straight face try to compare that crap with anything even remotely close to quality.

I understand that some people like that kind of stuff….The Kardasians have been on for years……it’s absolutely the lowest form of “TV”.

I think it says more about America than anything else……we are not an intelligent nation as a whole……all you have to do is leave the house.

Just because something has high ratings does not mean it has substance……those shows hit a certain demographic……

If you bothered to read this thread in its entirety you would see what you posted was dribble.

But knowing how you are “The Masked Singer” is right up there Goodfellas.

I’m not going to waste any more time on responding to you on this anymore……I don’t feel like playing the hidden ball trick with you on this subject.

No, it means that they like GOOD TV that’s entertaining.

You might not think it is, but the ratings suggest that you might be a little bit weird in that regard.

Just sayin’!

No reason to argue this one guys.

The reason DWTS and Masked Singer (and AGT) type show do well, is because its wholesome TV that whole families can watch together. They don’t have softcore porn usually, unlike regular TV shows nowadays.

They can also be good network tv background noise. You don’t have to watch intensely.

Not my cup of tea but a lot of people like it.

DWTS is now on like its 25th season, and The Masked Singer on its 10th.

If those constituted bad programming or garbage, as pollard suggests…then why are they both so dang POPULAR and ENDURING???

Obviously they are better than he’s willing to admit, otherwise they wouldn’t be so popular and enduring. His not liking them doesn’t change that.

McDonald’s sells the most burgers, so clearly the Big Mac is the best one can buy. Popularity does not equal quality. It’s one of the oldest logical fallacies.

Not saying MackyD’s is the best burger by any means. A product being the most popular doesn’t necessarily make it the “best.”

But it’s obviously pretty good or at least good enough…otherwise it wouldn’t be this popular and enduring. The key to attracting and keeping customers and being an enduringly popular product is being good enough to get repeat business and loyal customers. MackyD’s burgers have certainly been able to do that.

They are obviously not terrible or “garbage,” given that.

That’s my point.

Those two shows, even if they aren’t the best, are obviously better than he’s willing to acknowledge. Nothing that popular or enduring is “garbage.” Garbage doesn’t generally become popular for long, much less enduring.

There’s obviously something there that is appealing and entertaining to a large number of people…and over a long period of time…even if he’s not one of those people.

You openly admit that you watch DWTS?

Its alright to like crap programming but there is no reason to defend it. Reality and game shows are just silly entertainment.

I don’t agree.

The whole idea behind TV programming is to ENTERTAIN the masses.

People are tuning in to see a show…and advertisers are paying to ply their wares on the shows that are the most entertaining to the largest number of people (giving their ads in turn the most views). Ratings suggest that shows such as those are among the most entertaining, and as such, the most appealing.

As far as “quality” goes…what is YOUR measure of a program’s quality, if not its entertainment value?

People can talk about how competition shows (like the two I mentioned), game shows, or reality TV shows aren’t high drama, or high comedy, or don’t have the same artistic or production values, etc as others, but let’s be honest.

How many people would really want to tune in to watch Shakespearean theater or comic opera? There’s a reason you have to look to PBS and less viewed (often non-commercial) TV venues to find that sort of thing. Programs like that might rate highly on scripts, acting quality, production values, sophistication, etc. But do they really ENTERTAIN a lot of people and put on a show that most people want to watch?

Debatable.

Hell, most sitcoms aren’t all that sophisticated. They remain popular despite that, precisely because they are entertaining.

In the end…commercial broadcast TV is an ENTERTAINMENT industry. Ratings and enduring popularity suggest that such shows are industry GIANTS, because they achieve that industry’s goal of entertaining the masses.

This is silly. You defending crap just because its mindless fun. Fine but its really sad. The Kardashians had great rating, was on for years. And it was awful for the country

I didn’t watch the Kardashians, but as I said.

It was obviously popular to a lot of people…so in an industry that’s all about entertaining the most eyeballs possible…I wouldn’t denounce it as garbage.

From an industry perspective…sounds like it was the right show at the right time!

Again…what is YOUR measure of a program’s quality?

The Kardashians equal gabage programming. If you can’t admit that then i have no need to discuss tv with you

“garbage” according to what criteria?

Certainly not in terms of its ability to entertain and attract viewers.

How is that not a measure of quality? Isn’t that the goal of commercial TV?

I said its fine if you like hot garbage.
But its completely throwaway entertainment. Nobody is going back and rewatching seasongs of DWTS.
