UH 2027 Centennial plans

Tearing down the visitor booth on university. I always hated that thing but it’s weird to see it go

It always had a cheap flimsy look to it, so that helps
with the visuals.

From a construction perspective, when you’re demoing and ripping out existing structures and infrastructure to install a different design then it’s considered new. Just like New Cougar Place and The New Quad are new redevelopments since we tore down the old and built new.

Also, New Cullen cost ~$15M. So with the demo of Farish Hall, installation of Centennial Plaza and new fountain, installation of Wilhelmina Grove and other ancillary parts of the project $35M doesn’t seem out of line to me.

What is “new Cullen”?

The reconstruction of Cullen Blvd on campus that happened a few years ago.

I suppose it all adds up, and there is more in play here than what we think of as landscaping, in the residential sense. OTOH, the Cullen makeover seems to be a much longer stretch of street.

Only thing I’ve ever had professionally demolished and rebuilt was a residence and the demo was only ~4% of the new construction cost.

if cullen and reworking dorms are a part of it, then seems more likely to be tens of millions; still bet there was 5 million easily could have been spent better elsewhaere

Reworking dorms nor Cullen are part of it and if you don’t know what’s included in the scope then you shouldn’t be surmising that there’s somehow $5M to spare. These projects are competitively bid and the scope of work developed to ensure that the maximum can be done while meeting the budget.

HCC is spending $2.8 million to simply change its name. $35M seems like a good deal.

I’m sorry…what?

Yes, the forner HCC should attract the commuter students UH will no longer take.

It’s a huge WIN-WIN for both sides!

What is the metal stuff they are pulling up here?

Guessing its like a small gauge rebar type thing under the fountain just to hold the plaster in place.

Is there a cam for this somewhere? Similar to the football ops center?

Hmm, they are redoing the pool? Why not redo it to be more complimentary of the space?

That’s what it looks like. Separating the rebar from the concrete. They recycle both nowadays.

The first rendering had the current fountain completely removed and a new smaller rectangle just in front of the Cullen building.

People complained it was too small so now they are just rebuilding the existing one. I think.

I was one that complained but I kind of like the first rendering now. It’ll be nice either way though.

I really hope they don’t remove the fountain. That’s one of the land mark elements of our orginal Art Deco campus

Except that pool was added way later, in a decidedly non Art Deco design. This is more congruent with the original plans.

To me it should be more in the classical style. Like what they did at Hermann Park. A mini mall.
