Maybe I am missing something, but the frequency and type of baserunnig blunders over the last 5 years or so mystify me. Do you have any theory about what the root cause(s) might be?

Just clowning….have we seen an H-Town jersey yet?
I don’t want to say that all of the mistakes we’ve been witnessing should fall on the coaches because we’ve been making mistakes that even smart pre-high school players don’t make. Freshmen that grew up playing against lesser competition or guys that were just faster and more athletic than their high school competition get exposed in college if they aren’t playing heads up baseball. Some of the fastest guys I played with or kids I coached were terrible baserunners because they just relied on their speed to get them out of trouble and that ain’t happening at this level for a majority of the guys. Like a fielder, baserunners have to know what to do before the ball is hit so they can just react (back a step on line drives until you see it thru, knowing where the outfielders are playing, not running to 3rd from 2nd on a ball to your right) because the slightest hesitation or misstep at this level is all it takes to look stupid. And don’t get me started on my biggest pet peeve which is a lazy secondary lead on the pitch. A good aggressive secondary is so important when running the bases and you just see so many guys half ass it in college and the majors. Saying that, it is Todd’s team and I can’t imagine all of the boneheaded mistakes we’ve seen all fall on underclassmen because there’s been so many of them.
I like the uniforms a lot, but don’t you wear your city name on the chest for away games and the team name on the chest for home games in baseball? I think that may just be a Pro thing.
It’s almost as if I typed it myself……lol
100% spot on.
Then you had guys like Bagwell that were average speed at best but knew how to read pitchers, take the extra base, etc…. overall just smart base runners.
When the one from Germany pitches, do we get beer at half price?
My memory is not what it once was, but I seem to remember doing drills and going over “outs/counts/ runners at which base situations” with the express purpose of avoiding the kind of mistakes that seem to be happening. Maybe " modern" baseball emphasizes development of other aspects of the game.
Anyway thanks for the great response. We can hope that this season will see a new approach.
Looks like another weak hitting team this year, it’s early but not liking the swings we are getting
A walk, a wild pitch sends runner to third and then an infield single makes it 1-0 California…no outs in first…
Looking at when the first Astros exhibition game is. ![]()
Edit: it’s never a good thg when Whitting keeps commenting abt how deep a Bullpen staff they have.
Cal --3
UH-- 0
B4
Edit: trying to understand why the 2b didn’t try to turn 2 on that ground ball. ![]()
3-0 Bears going to bottom of the fourth…not a great start. Starting pitcher whipped through the first three innings but fell apart in the fourth…I can see why Whitting talked more about our bullpen…
I’ve seen enough already for tonight, going to be another loooong season
Good its this old man’s bed time…relief pitcher just gave up a 3 run bomb…6-0
Before I sign off, when do we start playing the SWAC teams?
I shut it down after the B4. Turned to Loyola Chicago basketball instead. ![]()
I tagged in, looked like a good pitching outing from whoever that was
Hoping we score this season.
Probably announce an extension tomorrow.
