UH Football Improvements

New user. Been scouting the site for a while but finally made an account after seeing the spring game today.

Just curious what improvements everyone would have for the football team from a marketing standpoint? The game wasn’t very well promoted and I and my family just happened to see it and be available.

Going into this season what would you like to see?

From what I gather, it isn’t too hard for fans to get to attend some of the practices. It sounds to me like the “Spring Game” wasn’t a game at all, just another practice.

So, you’re looking for football improvements or marketing improvements? Your thread title is semi-fuzzy. Football made the biggest improvement when they hired Willie. The pieces are in place.

Both. It’s an overarching title. From skimming through everything on this site that seems to hit both areas with marketing and just general improvements.

I’m guessing as soon as they learned the game wasn’t at TDECU, and was going to be on the practice fields, UH limited marketing for the spring game to not attract a huge crowd.

Last year was odd.

We had a shot at making the CCG/CFP up until the WVU game, and the marketing department not once ever marketed games with that in mind.

The WVU game was one of the most embarrassing show outs I’ve ever seen for this program, and we were a 1 loss team coming off a win against ranked ASU.

Themes are fun, but we have to stop expecting that themes are going to draw crowds. They’re not. The only exception is Luv ya Blues.

Overall line play. Defensive line has been moments of dominance but losing Allen presents challenges. Offensive line has been hit or miss, mostly miss, for years. Getting the line to consistently open holes between tackles would be a major improvement

I’ve never been to it, I always looked at it as another practice. As far as I know it is always free to attend, I can see why it might get limited promotion. I’m not sure if there is any financial upside to it, so I wouldn’t worry too much about the attendance. Maybe I’m wrong.

And yet … at many other major schools the Spring game is a big deal and incites enthusiasm for the team’s prospects heading into the fall. Here we seem to do all we can to downplay it which serves to diminish any excitement for the program.

Some cite the financial aspects. Well, the game itself may not generate positive cash flow however, the excitement it “could” produce (if marketed and structured well) may pour over into the upcoming season generating that positive cash flow. It’s the old “can’t see the forest because the trees are in the way.”

Once the season begins, the Spring “Game”will be a complete afterthought.

I don’t believe, for a minute, that it has ANY effect on the players, or coaches, Morale.

And while it may be a “disappointment” to a some fans, I don’t believe it will have ANY effect on butts in the seats this Fall either…

Often wonder where would we be today IF we had just hired Fritz instead of Holgy three years earlier?

Yea I’m with you @Dude

Disagree. I think the players loved it, saw so many hugs and handshakes among the players and their friends and families on the sidelines as the practice was getting cranked up. Lots of mingling, especially with the freshmen players in camp. Seemed like a good old-fashioned meet-and-greet. That may have been one of the benefits of having the small bleachers set up on the practice field vs. a John O’Quinn Field “game”, the closeness and the togetherness.

It was in keeping with the whole Frontier Fiesta festivities that have been very successful at UH since 1992. (The event started in 1939 but stopped and restarted a couple of times). Hopefully, the Spring game will continue and become a great event in future years under Willie. I know when I get my next Cougar Pride or season-ticket survey I’ll talk the event up and ask them to please contuinue to promote it and have it grow.

Anything that gets the players and fans more engaged with each other is worthwhile, imo. That’s always been a challenge, and the advent of the transfer portal and NIL has made it harder.

If concessions wants to continue to sell the 24oz beers, then they should offer the 12oz as an option. 24oz beers outside get warm too fast.

Mine don’t😎

I guess you consume faster than me, which is OK. My preference, instead of one 24oz cold in first half then warm in second half, is a cold 12oz to start first half and a cold 12oz to start second half. To each his own.

I wish we had hired Fritz when Herman defected.
