UH Football Improvements

Fritz was already at Tulane when Herman left in 2016.

At the time, there was no way Fritz can put himself in the top 3 of Applewhite, Kiffin, or Orlando.

when moved to the practice field, it had very limited seating…Hence no need for a lot of promotion. If moved back to TDECU next year, we may take a different approach.

Id like to see a more passing attack.

I understand Coach Willie likes ball control…that’s good too. It’s a thing of beauty when we can smash mouth it and run clock.

But i hope Wiggy gets to air it out more and run less. He’s a tough kid but we have running backs.

Not sure we disagree?

I never said the Spring Game was a bust.

What I said was we would ā€œforget aboutā€ the fact that it was held on the practice field instead of at TDECU.

I’m 100% confident the coaches and players got everything out of it that ā€œtheyā€ wanted.

It’s only a minority of ā€œfansā€ that have shown disappointment, and THEY will get over it.

I’m saying the Spring Game being on the practice field will have a ā€œZERO %ā€ negative impact on the season this Fall.

I tried to tell folks that we should hire Fritz while he was still at Sam Houston. and for each hire since.

You’re a smart man…

Yall need to stop trying to pretend the spring game is something it isn’t, it marks the end of spring practices, that is it. They focus heavily on player families and previous lettermen with events that are not public. The first hour was practice drills and then they did some live scrimmage, as a Coogfan I enjoyed it and it got me excited about the upcoming season, do I think they should have marketed it… no. Families, Lettermen and Diehards are who should be there.

I am over the 24 oz beers.

Then it shouldn’t be labeled as the Spring Game, but instead the final practice open to public. I grew up in Baton Rouge and would go to the Spring Game actually labeled as the Purple & Gold Spring Game. It was a real game with the team divided into two complete teams, and was usually sold out. Originally it was the freshman team against the varsity until freshmen became eligible to play on the varsity. I don’t think any schools have freshmen teams anymore.

In 2025, UH’s O passed 64% and ran 36%. It needs to be better balanced in 2026. Closer to 50%/50%. I want UH to run more, but that does not mean Weigman. I thought Weigman ran too much last year, increasing his risk of injury. I would reduce the number of scripted run plays for Weigman and be happy with only a few per game, for first downs, TDs, or unscripted improvisions. With the improvement in the OL and talent at RB, I hope UH is now in a position to control the line of scrimmage most of the time. Henderson has talent, but he young and needs time to develop.

Remember when Holgorsen cancelled the spring game in 2023 because of inclement weather and lack of depth of o-line and we tried to crucify him.

This is not a UH issue. The late spring transfer window, among other factors, destroyed spring games as we know them, last year 19 power 4 programs chose to not have spring games. UT did not have a game last year and this year, after backlash, their game was even more of a practice then our ā€œgameā€. I think true spring games are a thing of the past, even with the late transfer window ending.

Totally agree.

For some reason I thought we ran more. You’re probably right.

If you had stated that initially, I’d have given you a big golden thumbs up. So you’ll get one now.

Do those practices have 3000+ in attendance, offer breakfast tacos, and have Shasta and Sasha in attendance, along with the UH Cheerleaders in the House?

And offer a chance for parents, family, friends, and fans to see their athletes on the football field for the first time of the calendar year. It’s also a great way to segue into the football season from the long basketball season we just lived through.

Marketing is overrated- we play certain teams and fans show up like they’ve been invested all year - you can’t create passion - either you have it or not

Too many ways to see when teams are playing - you just need to decide

Winning certainly changes things at UH.
We play a horrible home pre conference at home in hoops but have continued to sell out all our games.
Thats only because we have had national title hopes under Sampson. Otherwise we go back to struggling 2-3000 for games.
Winning matters in the big city and let’s hope Willieball can get us there.

It’s also because we only have to sell about 7000 seats to sell out Fertitta :slightly_smiling_face:

And I’ve been to wayyyyyy too many UH Basketball games when there weren’t even 2,000 people in attendance. It’s definitely ALL about winning for significant crowds to support UH teams!

Just like a movie, the attractions are the stars. I got tired of our basketball non-conference because we play soup cans at home. I didn’t attend a single non-conference game last season. I watched the slaughters on ESPN+.

Football is the same. Want fans to show up? Put together an attractive non-conference schedule. I also think we should have an alternating home & home with UTSA & Tulane which gives fans an easy fun road trip annually.

If we want to play Rice, make it game 1. Both teams are undefeated and the media can recycle stories annually. Also it allows a long time to promote special ticket packages to fill the stadium.

Big 12 gives us a good conference schedule to sell which should help ticket sales if we had a sales force.

I rather not play Rice game 1.
There will be years when we need week 0 or week 1 FCS team to work out the kinks on offense.

I remember us being down by 10 at halftime at Rice in 2018 but thankfully we pulled it out in the 4th as that was the first game.
