Most o’ y’all tradin’ stories about your HS days way back before my HS even opened in the 70s
Who tripped? WALTRIP!
Proud Alum
Edit: I won’t mention the couple schools that yelled that saying after beating us.
Did your “Rebels” represent the “Rebels” of the Confederate South? Or any generic “Rebel”.
There is definitely some overlap between a “Rebel” and a “Maverick”.
The Confederacy.
Up until about the mid-80s, people at SJS used to fly Confederate flags in the stands at football games.
First, the flags and Johnny Reb symbols were eliminated.
Then, they tried to make the Rebel more of a Revolutionary War type.
Finally, they changed it to something completely without controversy: the Mavericks.
Same at Westbury. That flag was on everything. My drill team uniform, cheerleader uniforms and the football team ran out to Dixie. Same with Lee HS.
I love the flip to the Revolutionary Rebels. One man revolutionary is another man’s rebel.
Your HS probably cost more than some of your universities, especially the UH one.
The last six, seven years have brought up an extremely dangerous belief in our society.
Denying the past like it never happened.
What does that do?
It creates a cancel culture that is ultimately self destructive.
The old expression of “History repeats itself” is and will always be true. Every current or past society has proven it to be true.
We want to erase Washington because he had slaves?
Does that mean every single country in the world is going to have to manually and academically erase their past? Yes this includes African countries too.
Think about the consequences.
How does that help us?
How does it make us more united and more importantly how does it make it us respect each other more?
The assumption that #1 should be helped because of his/her skin color creates animosity from the start. Hence co-workers thinking he/she got the promotion because of it. We are now seeing/experiencing working environment quotas that creates the exact opposite of the original intent.
Instead of pushing this agenda to the extreme we ought to promote individuals on their own merits. It is in IMO insane that we do not see more African American H.C. in the NFL and ncaa/fbs. When you see a texans/bob got a job and hold it for so many years it speaks volume of a league that does not promote coaches on their own merits.
All of this cancel culture and NFL/ncaa aberration is 100% tied to each other.
Mr. Yeoman played African American players because and above all they deserved it.
What a teaching lesson for every single one of us.
What a teaching lesson for every politician
More importantly what a teaching lesson for our own society.
When did this happen?
How much did we learn from it?
Hey Jess - My athletic memories of Waltrip were a bit better than yours. (I had to look in the yearbooks)
My sophomore year (1966-67), Waltrip finished 10-2 in FB and won the City Title by beating Bellaire 26-6 before losing a bi-district match-up against a Spring Branch team that was enroute to the state finals. Waltrip ended the year ranked 7th in the State of Texas. (Les Burton, the Waltrip FB coach, left to become the AD for the HISD.) The hoops team had 2 6’6" guys and won the City Title as well as both the Spring Branch Tournament and the Jaycee Tournament.
My junior year (1967-68), Waltrip finished 6-2-2 in FB. The hoops team was 13-5 in district with a 27-8 overall record and was ranked in the Top 10 in the state for most of the year, winning the Spring Branch Tournament and finishing 2nd in the Jaycee Tournament (losing to Wheatley 67-41).
My senior year (1968-69), Waltrip FB was 4-1 in district and finished the year 5-5. The hoops team was 8-1 in district (losing once to Lamar 47-49 before later beating them 59-51) and finishing the year at 21-6-1 (once again losing to Wheatley in the Jaycee Tournament 91-68). [We should all know a couple of guys who played on those Wheatley teams. Was it (a) Jones & Bonney or (b) Bonnie & Clyde?]
Yes, we has some good teams also when I was there too in 76-78. I just remember a certain team doing that chant after they beat us. Through my brother-in law I know of a pretty good athlete who was there around your time. I thk he played QB during his Waltrip time.
Edit: Waltrip was ranked #2 or #3 in State in basketball when I was there . Unfortunately Milby upset us who had 2 studs that went on to UH-- Williams, O’Neal.
The Waltrip QB in 1966-67 - Jimmie Sheffield - led the city in passing and total offense. The next 2 years, a classmate of mine - George “Bubba” Berg - played QB, and he later converted to playing wide receiver at Rice before becoming an attorney here in Houston.
Yep, couldn’t agree more. We either have some extremely stupid people in this country or manipulative or combination of both. If you erase the past, you also erase all the rights and positives that have come with it with the objective to be re-made in their mindsets.
The cancel culture needs to be canceled. They need to receive some big time pushpack and punches in their own mouths. They won’t stop until they are stopped. Their approach is not on par with the positive evolution of the country that the USA has experienced throughout its history.
That’s him-Sheffield . My brother-in law was QB at Reagan during same time–Im sure you’ll fig out who that is also…you seem to know your stuff from back then. I didn’t want to just blast his name- Waltrip QB out there.
Serious question- could we use this as a slight recruiting advantage? Ask African American players if the really want to go a University where their donors celebrate and fight for a racist song?
lol…

The irony of this is through the roof.

Yes, those emails should be sent to every recruit we are after that UT is trying to get.
If that was the case they would’ve stayed in the swac but money talks when it comes to crossing the line.
The ones that integrated didn’t do it willingly - there were folks paid to ensure they cross that line no matter how bad the situation was for them personally.
Plenty of cash changed hands as a result.
As for HISD - y’all didn’t steal any mascots from Yates or Booker T? Lol
Youngsters now probably would call us liars if they knew how much those schools changed demographic wise. Same thing happened in Fort Bend County, etc
Now in some areas look at the houses - the same house in South Park was found in Bellaire. South Park arguably was nicer then but Bellaire was buffered better for the future location wise.
They weren’t in our playing district or we would have. ![]()
