UTAH

Agreed.

And ya know…I wish we adopted the d3 playoff model, under which EVERY football conference of six or more teams gets an auto bid, with a few at larges in each region.

Eliminate a regular season game or two to make time for a bigger playoff.

WIN IT ON THE FIELD!!!

My argument is that the cpf wasn’t a legitimate decider because it excluded 60% or more of the division. A real, legitimate playoff system would allow any team in the division/league to play into it and compete for a title. So UCF has every right to claim a title that a cfp tournament winner does.

The cfp was (is) just an invitational tournament. It’s not an actual playoff. It is functionally no different than preseason basketball tournaments. They invite who they think people will watch.

After the 2017 season, one of the BCS recognized polls ranked UCF as #1. IF they want to claim it they can. IF someone does not like it, that is their own personal problem.

After 2010, the same thing. One of the recognized BCS polls ranked TCU #1. TCU does not choose to recognize it and so they do not. As such, the TCU fans generally do not either as they follow the lead of the school.

Utah may have finished undefeated, but unless a recognized source awards them #1, they can not self award, IMO. That is lame. If they choose to though, I am not offended by it. Their choice.

Last year was the first year where there was any semblance of a playoff to override any of these past polls. Prior, it was just an invitational as last year showed top 4 was not enough for validity.

Was it the AP or Coaches’ Poll?

If it was neither, then few will take their claim seriously.

2010 TCU finished #2 in both.

2017 UCF finished #6 in one and #7 in the other.

Sounds like a personal problem…

If so then it’s a personal problem shared by a virtual consensus of college football aficionados.

A consensus will recognize a playoff champion, or a final #1 in the AP or Coaches Poll as a national champion.

A similar consensus will scoff at any other such claim to be national champion.

Utah falls under that. They didn’t win a playoff, nor did they finish #1 in either major poll.

As a result, few take their title claim seriously.

You all have seen that the sec comissioner is putting pressure on the cfp. He basically says the sec allegedly has a tougher conference and therefore should pretty have more teams. That is what he implying. It is a matter of t8me before the BIG12 and acc only get one team in the cfp…and watcha going to say?
Bloody murder?
Unacceptable?
Why?

Nonsense. SEC is not going to take bids from Big 12. They are going to get expansion of the playoff, to 14 or 16. It will be easy, everyone will agree and ESPN will push for it.

Right now the BIG12 has one spot. 14 to 16 will that include all conference winners or more of the same?
College football is on a downward spiral.

CMON!! Big 12 doesnt HAVE one spot. They got one spot last year because every team in the league lost 2 games and Iowa state and BYU did their losing at end of the year. No reason for Big 12 not to have at least 2 teams ranked in top 12 most years.

LOL might be my favorite gif of all time!

They really need to auto-bid all the conference champs or split the division. They are heading toward splitting the division imo. Whether that includes the big12 acc I don’t know but it’s coming. I can’t see them ever auto-bidding a cusa champ even though it’s the right thing to do. But stacking half the bracket with b1g/sec teams is complete nonsense.

I wrote about product saturation the other day. They increase big10 and sec presence in the cfp? They are heading for disaster. The cfp media numbers along with less attendance dating back to pre covid are clear/facts indications that the public is turning their back on college football. This is where there is a small window to save the “ship”.
