Me too put junior and senior Tune on Tom Hermans teams and we would be just as good.
Tune hate should not exist. He ranks top 3 in career yards, and passing TDs. He played under much worse leadership than our other QB greats as well. Dude was a warrior and was the consummate teammate. He gave everything he had for this program and that was evident in the underwhelming 2022 season especially at times when it looked like everyone outside of him and Tank had quit. Clayton Tune is a great in my book.
I agree that Tune is underrated in UH history. His journey always seemed to have obstacles ahead. The original plan was for Tune to redshirt his freshman year, but he was forced into action due to Dâeriq Kingâs injury. He actually exceeded the games permitted to claim a redshirt year by playing in the Armed Forces Bowl, when another UH backup QB, Quinten Dormady, publicly announced he was transferring. Coach Applewhite was fired after that game, and enter Coach Holgorsen. Ideally, Tune might have had another opportunity to redshirt, with King as the starter, but Holgorsen, struggled working with King and King got injured, and then decided to transfer to Miami, forcing Tune, again, to lead the team at QB.
Sometimes the path to success is not a straight line, but a series of zigs and zags. Those who navigate the changes have the greatest chance for success. I think Tune handled the changes professionally, worked hard, and had a successful UH career.
Yea but he canât be a man because he doesnât smoke the same cigarette as me and his name starts with T (and not K or W). ![]()
(Rolling Stones reference for the youngsters)
Hey Hey Hey thatâs what I say
@JohnnyCougar A+ reference.
I Canât Get No Satisfaction
Those of us who werenât born in the Stone Age donât get the reference.
Iâm sure yâall want ZZ Top playing at our games too.
Abso freaking lutely
Guaranteed Sellout

Weigmanâs bowl game TD pass record beat out every other UH QB.
Best of all he has another year left.
I know you kids out there truly love these qbâs that you named as the best, greatest, etc.etc.
One that didnât make the list, he didnât have the numbers nor the persona, he simply wore red/white and led a fierce coog team that had great respect for him-as well as the fans. Thanks to him, the coogs arrived on the national scene (finished #4 national) and were recognized as something more than a practice game. 1976/7 SWC/Cotton Bowl winner Danny Davis.
Danny was a great leader!
Danny Davis was a great QB! He was a leader and a winner against the very best kind of competition. Any list of great Houston QBs has to include him.
Did Danny become a minister at some church? I really liked the guy and he was praised by CBY and CER (Elmer Red).
Go Coogs !
Little known fact⊠Elmer sounds way cooler in Spanish than EnglishâŠ
Yes. Long time ago i saw a tv thingy about him being a minister at a Houston church, not very far from UH I think. He sure looked big in the interview, was kinda small on the field when he played but played like King Kong! I bet that cotton bowl team could wipe out any big 12 team nowadays, including the current coogs.
Yes, Danny was slender but he was a great leader. Also, Not long after he graduated I ran into him at the Ford dealership on 610 South Loop . I was buying a Ford crew cab. I was wearing a UH Cap and my salesman kept Danny hid until I signed the deal with him. He knew I would jump at a chance to do business with Danny. I did get to talk too him on the way out. Danny had a nameplate on his desk that said âQBâ . I lost track of him after that. Great guy!
Go Coogs !
Now that it is 2026 maybe a bit easier.
I think the style of play is what turns people off on Ward and King.
Keenum was pass first and pass until your are down (I even remember once he threw one after he was down, knee I think) he had âwillâ to succeed! He could run but yardage was not his strength, it was extending the play and finding somebody in chaos, throwing from right to left side of the field on a dime.
Klingler and Ware were âscheme successes:â. I loathe that criticism. EVERY OFFENSE is a scheme!
I am proud of all of out QBs. I am one of the few here who remember Kolb and how he MUST have had eyes in the back of his head to see a threat coming. Sad that his toughness became a liability in the pros where a hit was morel ikely to cause a concussion.
Reminiscing about QB Danny Davis has me thinking. Who ran UHâs veer offense the best?
Gary âMoonâ Mullins
D.C. Nobles
Danny Davis
Darrell Shepard
