Watching the game through the lens of Reality

Continuing the discussion from Week 3 Depth Chart:

As a fan… …I was riveted the entire game. It was interesting to see the adjustments. It was entertaining. …and most of all it was a very SATISFYING Win. While the initial question was intriguing, I didn’t even hesitate in my response. Sometimes these threads take on a sort of pessimistic, digging for something to complain about tone. Not the question itself, mind you… but the responses by a minority segment of “fans”, who use hindsight to predict what “could have”, or often “would have” happened. As for me, I would ALWAYS rather finish strong, than start strong…

The threads express the same fallacy every week. If we aren’t rolling up massive yards we aren’t a relevant program nationally.

I think there are people in our fan base that would gladly go back to Art Briles, 650 yds a game, and never beating anyone worth a #%^

One of the issues is we are watching paint dry. We are seeing growth and the learning curve in real time. It takes time and requires our patience. I think many of us see some of the issues and have battered Coog syndrome. When we saw these mistakes under the previous regime we didn’t get the corrections and adjustments we’ve been seeing this season. The first two games started slow and ramped up and adjustments were made.

It could be things keep ramping up and I certainly hope so. The problem is our lack of patience. Last year we kept wanting to see more from Smith and that never happened. We wanted to see Chris succeed and it didn’t pan out the way we hoped. Each showed moments of brilliance but overall it wasn’t the continued growth we were hoping to see.

So naturally people are worried. So far things are an improvement, but that all changes with each game. We want to be hopeful but building that trust and hope takes time and repetition.

I think many express their nervousness and fears with other Coog fans because we know it’s relatively safe and others can relate. In the end, we all want to see our Coogs prevail but it’s going to take time for the trust and patience to build.

I like your point.

  1. Everyone ought to be ecstatic to be back in a power conference.
  2. Patience in the instant gratification age is notceasy to understand for many.
  3. Some even question a HC that has won at every level.
  4. What some should understand is how poorly skilled our roster was last season and how difficult it is to make it better.
  5. We are trending in the right direction but for the “ensemble” to come together it takes patience.

Same thing happens in basketball threads.

Maybe it will end if we ever get good in basketball? /s/

Until this group wins those games, yeah, people are gonna prefer the fun losses to the boring ones. :slightly_smiling_face:

Patience, or lack thereof, cannot be attributed to a group. It’s an individual choice. As fans, we owe it to any new coach, and must take into account what he started with, and what he’s done with it. I don’t believe there’s another coach in college football that would have done more last year than Willie did, given the MESS he was left with. This years team is comprised of a handful of guys he got in the 2024 cycle, where he was late to the new coach carousel, and the transfers he was able to get this past cycle. The majority of HIS 4 year players (HS recruits) have yet to see the field, but are being brought along to begin having an impact in 2026. There’s a reason they say give a guy 3 years, before passing judgement; and that’s all things being equal, however, given how late he got here in 2023 and the state the program was in, this is essentially his 1st year of that 3 year grace period… and we’re ALREADY seeing MARKED improvement. It only gets better fellas. I’ve known Willie for 28 years. I have a “frame of reference” in speaking of these things… Go Coogs! >>> Friday Night Prognostication… Houston 31 - Colorado 17.

We fire coaches that go 8-4. UH should be on a 5 minute plan not a 5 year plan.

If You’re trying to be funny (sarcastic), you missed the mark. If You believe this, You’re unrealistic, given the aforementioned. If you’re just trying to stir the pot, why? And WHO is “We”? Are you speaking for someone other than yourself who has ANY say so in hiring and firing, or do you just like to believe you do?

Hear ! Hear ! Defense wins Championships…always has and always will

Our best years have been with a stifling D…the video game O is an absolute blast to watch but it doesn’t win the big games that matter

OK Mrs. Fritz.

No it doesn’t. Even the SEC came to the same conclusion.

We need to enjoy being p4 , the big 12 is safer than the Acc . We’re wasting time worrying for nothing. The teams in the big12 as a collection can’t be ignored.

I previously said would wait until after the 1st 4 game to set my expectations of how well we will do for the season. Mid way I have some questions about our talent level, especially after the first 3.5 quarters of the Rice game. The final score made it look way easier than it was. We have a couple of long runs and one bomb masking the overall weak performance.

What has really impressed me was how disciplined they have played. No turnovers in either game shows good coaching and play execution. If we can play up to the competition that should be hopeful for a good year.

That’s a quote from Renu Khator…

I mean, at least back then we were racking up 650 yards a game. Now we’re not even doing that much.

Show me a National Champ that didn’t have a good D…Auburn with Cam was about the worst and it was still Top 40

A good D isn’t enough, you need an offense too, look at LSU’s recent Championship. They’ve had a great defense for a long time but needed a Heisman QB to win it all.
