Perfect exmple: We drove the day of games from near Dallas and my uncle gave a ticket to a Houston area friend. His Houston area friend always showed up halfway in the 1st quarter and left at the beginning of the 4th or halfway in the 4th if game was close.
The complaint of attendance is more directed towards the alumni than university administration. Can the university do more, yes but the apathy of the larger alumni is for them to solve.
There are no quick fixes to the problem. At this point UH should give some tickets away to local schools and businesses to garner interest and fill some empty seats. Hell, do a half price beer day… something. At the very least you make money off of concessions and avoid the embarrassment of bad headlines
EVERY employee and contractor at NASA should have gotten an email about FREE tickets for their whole family to honor their service to the space program.
Put up a billboard on I45S at NASA Rd One.
The NASA presence at the game and the feed from the ISS was AWESOME.
Now, in two years, let’s take it to the next level.
The more time passes, the more confident I am there’s nothing we can do about it. We’ve dramatically improved our gameday presentation. The team is good. Tickets are cheap. I really don’t know what else we can do, with the caveat that weather and game times are outside our control.
It was cooler than the Oregon State game, but it was still plenty hot and another 11am kick just sucks for getting people to go to the game. The people who have been to UH games know better than to buy tickets behind the vistors bench because the heat is brutal over there, and it doesn’t help that they have the cameras facing that sideline too.
I think people will feel better when they quit even worrying about attendance (and the frantic, hyper-emotional hot takes.) It’s more fun to worry about our record and TV ratings.
They are a very large urban campus. While larger, we also have a lot of students. We aren’t exactly the same but there are plenty of similarities. Fighting existing traditional state schools, football rich, lots to do in city, etc. They are also much younger than us so they had that headwind.
And they are doing some things we could be doing. There’s no reason it wouldn’t help us too. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel here.
And let’s say it’s easier for them and we won’t be as successful with it for reasons noted, that doesn’t mean we can’t do a lot more good than we are currently.
I think a good portion of our attendance issues have to do with the fact that Houston-area fans are conditioned to watching on TV. Even as a season ticket holder who was really looking forward to this game and wanted to see the pregame stuff, getting out of bed and out of the house in time to barely make kickoff was a HARD sell.
Two weeks from now, when it’s a little bit cooler and when we’re hopefully 5-1 and ranked in the top 20 in both polls - what will the excuse be when OSU fills up 75% of our stadium?
It’s just sad. As a 2012 grad, I miss seeing the stadium packed under Sumlin, and post-grad under Herman. Applewhite and Dana destroyed fan support. Willie is doing everything he can to put a good product back on the field but I think we need a big win over a ranked opponent.
If we had beaten Tech… just think of what it could be now.
