We are a stepping stone school. We have to accept that fact. Even in the Big 12, we are still a stepping stone for coaches that want the Texas/Texas A&M job
Dana sold UH on continuity and it’s not getting us anywhere.

Disagree. We were one. We don’t have to be one now since we got power conference money coming in. Houston is rich with resources both financially and in football. The right person can get us to juggernaut status. However, if we keep accepting mediocre effort and performance from our coaching staff, we won’t get there.
What exactly is “Power Conference Money” in 2023? The SEC and B1G makes twice, almost three times as much as any Big 12 school makes.
Houston is battling every school east to west for Houston for recruits. It won’t make a difference.
It’s simple, Houston should:
But the Big 12 makes more than the ACC under its current GOR.
If ACC money is “power conference money,” then Big 12 money surely is.
Nobody is saying we need another Yeoman. We just need a competent head coach
We will never get another Yeoman, but at this point, I’d be pretty content if we got another Pardee, Briles minus the tainted history, or Herman minus the treason.
No Briles.
Are Notre Dame and Oklahoma stepping stones? Alabama was some 20 years ago. Like 99% of schools UH will never be immune from losing a coach, but we have a lot of advantages. We could very well find someone like Kyle Whittingham or Dave Clawson or Mike Gundy or Troy Calhoun.
I’ll take the treason tbh
If the ACC’s media deal had expired at the same time as the Big 12’s, they would most likely be able to get a 50 million minimum because of Clemson, FSU and UNC alone (of course, in the hypothetical sense that those schools didn’t leave for the P2.)
The same could be said for the PAC12 if USC/UCLA didn’t leave.
This is not really a fair comparison in 2023 because the ACC signed their deal before any of the big realignment happened.
When was the last time Gundy won the Big 12?
I think it’s safe to say that UH expects to win championships.
Doesn’t matter.
It’s still LESS money.
And if that’s still considered “power conference” money, then the greater Big 12 money MUST…as a matter of logical necessity, ALSO be considered “power conference” money.
2011 when they had Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon. That Iowa State loss kept them from getting a title shot.
Yeoman’s don’t grow on trees.
He was one of a kind.
We’re honestly just playing with words.
The B1G teams are making 80-90 million a year vs. the 30 million that the a Big 12 is making.
What constitutes “Power Conference Money” can be argued. If the Big 12 is making Power Conference money, then the B1G/SEC is making MegaPower Conference Money.
The resources offered by any competitive P2 school clobbers any Big 12 school.
Once Prime leaves Colorado, Colorado will most likely go back to being an average school on the field.
Does not need 2 be Yeoman.
Just a solid HC who isn’t a running joke and unprofessional crackpot.
If they kick ass and move on = job well done.
This is where UH is at now. Its discouraging.
(I see the Tech crowd making most of these)
Doesn’t always make a difference.
The B1G has a lot of “parasites” for example, that bring in B1G dough…but are perennially mediocre or even bad.
See Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern, Maryland, Rutgers, etc.
That’s why I said any “competitive” P2 school
I agree they have parasites, but the parasites know their role and place. They’re just racking in the money which benefits their university.
Nobody is taking the UH job just to land at Rutgers. They’re going to wait for the Ole Miss job, the Auburn job, the LSU job, or hell… the Texas A&M job.
He is just one of a few successful coaches I listed, but most UH fans would be good with 158-76 (.675 winning percentage) and 17 consecutive bowls, including five NY6 bowls. I don’t think we’re getting Saban.
…there is a hierarchy in college football.
Unless you are a top 5-10 brand, you ARE a stepping stone program.
Which is fine…WHY NOT USE THAT KNOWLEDGE TO OUR ADVANTAGE.
Always be looking to get the next hungry ambitious coach that WANTS to use his success at UH to build his resume. Actually sell them to come here by telling them he can leave! Our philosophy is that we have a department always vetting future coaches for their fit with what we are trying to accomplish BIG PICTURE.
Then take the buyout $$ and rinse and repeat building the program and keeping the excitement HIGH.
Whenever we go for these “continuity” coaches we suck the life out of the program and you never know…maybe one day, a young ambitious coach will DECIDE to stay.
CDH NEVER had any of the traits we should have been looking in for a Head coach.
He was a mediocre head coach at WVU with a poor work habit, poor recruiting record, poor media relations, and questionable off the field behaviors that was about to be fired.
Why did we even hire that bum…no surprise it tuned out this way
