The campus was lit after that 2009 Tech game… for days. It was a great time to be a Coog.
It’s about to happen.
Haha! I’m guessing it was January 8, 1992 and UT came into Hofheinz with a 44-0 all-time record vs. UH. We defeated them 73-65. My amigo was very “animated” around the mostly Longhorns which were their typical smug selves. His animation got him kicked out but it was near the end of the game and I believe he was able to watch from the concourse. That was an amazing day for UH women’s hoops and it was hard to contain ourselves.
still is a great time to be a Coog
Can’t believe it’s been 16 years since we beat them…
Mine would probably be Football Gameday or Louisville with Lamar Jackson game…
Plenty of great memories — Heisman Kid is one of them — Few things can top spray painting your son bronze to get him on ESPN College Gameday
Nov. 2011 v. SMU

Taking my kids to watch the coogs…how they went crazy when we beat TT at the end, and the rout of Rice. They went bonkers.
I can’t even narrow it down to one fondest memory of different eras, but here are among them. Since you said Athletics, I didn’t limit to football on this football board.
Elston leading comeback over Aggies in last second.
Elston leading comeback over Nebraska in last seconds of Cotton Bowl.
Beating UT 30-0 in first year of SWC.
60-40 comeback over UT.
Phi Slama Jama win over Louisville in Final 4.
Comeback win over La Tech from down 34-7 in 4th.
Comeback win over Pitt in Armed Forces Bowl from down 34-9 in 4th.
Peach Bowl Win.
Win over Purdue in Sweet 16.
Winning B12 BB championship in 23-24 season.
Winning B12 BB championship in 24-25 season.
Anytime we beat UT or aTm in anything.
Good list, Mike — lotsa good memories there…
Yeah, and lots of hoarseness after those games.
Mike’s list is excellent!
Most fans do not mention these milestones, because they were not born yet, but three events did more to put UH on the national map in football and basketball than any other, and they occurred in back-to-back years. Either I was there or was listening on my transistor radio to the games going crazy.
- In 1967, unranked UH defeated #2 Michigan St. in East Lansing, MI, in a 37-7 shocker.
- In 1968, undefeated UH defeated undefeated UCLA 71-69 in the Houston Astrodome, before the largest college or NBA crowd in history.
- In 1968, UH played UT to a 20-20 tie in Austin. And yes, Paul Gipson did convert on a 4 and 1 at the goal that the referees missed. It was my first introduction to referee bias in favor of UT.
My wife and I attended the 1968 game in Austin.
The Veer vs The Wishbone. Super Bill Bradley was the first-ever Wishbone QB.
Largest crowd in UT history. Chris Gilbert vs Paul Gipson.Full moon. A 20-20 tie.
What an event!
JL, you’re right, most fans weren’t fans yet in 1967 or 1968. 1967 was 58 years ago, so I would imagine that hardly anyone born in the late 50’s or early '60s would have been paying attention much to UH sports back then.
I wasn’t a UH fan until I started night school there in 1976 at 29 years of age. So basically anything UH did before that is nothing I can relate to. However, when I was in the Navy in 1967, I remember the surprise when UH beat Michigan State in '67.
That’s why it was so nice having guys like Pat Moran and some more of the older Coogs keep letting us younger guys (at 78, I’m younger than several) learn some of the UH history.
I would be willing to bet that the refs didn’t miss that TD, but rather ignored it.
The Gipson “TD” happened right in front of us. Sure looked like he scored.
Of course Yeoman could have attempted a FG on fourth down, thus winning 23-20. He didn’t.
We returned in 1976 and took care of business.
UH FG kicker Terry Leiweke missed an earlier FG from about 30 yards, which may have influenced Coach’s decision to go for it. I probably would have gone for it too.
Not in any specific order…
Ware winning the Heisman.
Hogan kicking a 50+ yard FG to beat Todd Graham.
Freezing my butt off in the 1984 Cotton Bowl. That is also when 7-Eleven’s became a UH tradition.
My family driving from near Dallas for Phi Slama Jama games on weekdays.
The NCAA Baseball Regional we hosted and the game went over 18 innings and ended around 2 AM (even though we lost).
Winning the Peach Bowl.
The Armed Forces Bowl comeback vs. Pitt.
The refs calling “illegal touching” against Penn St. on one of the first plays when we played them in the TicketCity Bowl.
Baseball’s come from behind victory to win the College Station Regional during the Rayner Noble years. Texas A&M radio announcer Dave South kept reminding Aggie fans to buy tickets for the upcoming Super Regional they were supposed to host for the entire game. It’s like he was just convinced they would win. The Aggie message board kept posting “SHUT-UP DAVE!!!” every time he gave the reminder as UH got closer and closer and finally won the game and the regional.
I was in Dallas but don’t remember the play by Penn?
You’re right, I can’t find it. I could have sworn the refs made an unusual call and with the Sandusky scandal, it had us all laughing. Maybe I’m mixing it up with what someome in the stands said. Ironic that my dad, who was also at the game with me, remembers it.
Oh well, the rest I listed can be verified.
