Kensington Club steak at S&A made for a pretty good night out back in the late 60’s - early 70’s. Almost every one in Houston had friends from UH working there as well as waiters and waitresses which made it even more fun.
Believe one of the original owners was a UH grad. As well as many restaurants like The Courtyard, Mason Jar, Pappas.
Does anyone remember eating at Bonanza or Roy Rogers. My parents used to take us to the Bonanza on Stella Link after mass. Its a law mower shop now, but every time I pass it it brings up good memories.
Sure Sizzler, Bonanza, Roy Rogers before Arby’s, I remember Pig Stands, A&W. One of the first Jack in Box in Texas was on Long Point.
Remember Bonanza and Sizzler well.
Out on the West Coast, I still see Sizzler.
Yep, there a couple where I live. Never been to them though.
I remember eating at the Bonanza on Fuqua when I was a kid. That’s back when going out for a hamburger at Burger King was a big deal, so Bonanza was close to fine dining, almost like Red Lobster.
That location later became a Po Folks. Coincidentally, I drive past a Po Folks in Destin FL a couple weeks back. Nearly went off the road when I saw it.
I liked Steak and Ale a lot, especially the one at Wilcrest and I-10. They had a great salad bar and their steaks were good and reasonable. I also loved their French onion soup.
I also liked the Old San Francisco Steak House, but it is only for private occasions now.
Old San Francisco Steakhouse was great. If my memory serves me right, they used to have a high flying swing inside as an attraction.
Yeah, the lady on a swing, swinging over your heads.
Gang,
Does anyone else here remember Pipe Organ Pizza in Memorial City? It was a favorite of mine during my childhood! It was a pizza place with a huge pipe organ playing continuously in the middle.
Are we now just talking about places we used to go?
My favorite as a kid was Kapans on Kirby. They would bring crap balls to your table like bread.my dad would always order the variety oysters.
Another place that i loved was Primos in a house downtown, it was a mexican restaurant but none of my family remembers it so maybe i got the name wrong.
Sorry. I don’t think your memory of good tasting “crap balls” is accurate
Haha I was a kid, they were awesome
Yes and I’ve already mentioned Farrells in the Galleria. Loved that place for parties.
Remember when fajitas were an exotic new food in the 80’s? We used to go to Fajitas a Celebration restaurant across from Westwood Mall all the time until they closed down. Later I stumbled upon one last remaining one near Greenspoint Mall. But that closed as well. But believe it or not, there’s one in Arizona still open, like a time capsule. Hopefully I can make it out there.
It was on my original list, but I think Sonny Look’s Sir Loin House deserves a bit more. It was a really good restaurant and we use to have the Taxi Squad lunches there.
While I’m at it, I also remember eating at Victoria Station fairly often. Their prime rib was great.
Has the Great Mine Company off Westheimer been mentioned? Overall pretty good, but the did a great job on prime rib, particularly if you asked for the outside cut.
Remember Pipe Organ. My favorite was Panjos, they had several locations.
Last Bennigans I have been to or even seen is in Monahans, TX right off 20. Apparently there is one up in Borger, TX too, middle of no where in the panhandle. Lately they have been opening restaurants internationally.
Another old spot I loved growing up was Ryan’s. Always seemed better than Golden Corral.
Whatever happened to Tumbleweed? I remember one on 1960. You felt like you were in a western movie setting. Great T-bone steaks.
