Seriously? That is good to hear. My late father in law loved that place.
Does anyone remember Mi Luna, the Tapas bar in Rice Village? That was our spot when my wife and I were dating.
The Gambas Al Ajillo were legit!
Ok, remember Gallagher’s that served the cheese crock, yummy prime rib? Thanks for posting about Bellaire Broiler burger closing. I’m out of town and didn’t realize that.
My parents lived the salad bar at Steak and Ale. I loved Duchos!
That place was delicious. If I recall it was owned by the same people who owned Fudruckers. So not sure if they are still in business. I know that even after the one in Houston closed they still had one in Dallas.
SPANISH VILLAGE HAS A LAST-MINUTE REPRIEVE
On July 17, Spanish Village , a Houston institution at 4720 Almeda, closed, as reported by Loretta Ruggiero of the Houston Press. However, there is good news: Spanish Village has been purchased and i s set to reopen on August 1.
The name of the new owner has not been announced (and despite rumors, Turkey Leg Hut’s marketing firm, Boost One Marketing, has denied being the purchaser). Current owner Abhi Sreerama says, “For the time being, they’ve said they plan on running it as-is. But improvements to the building are forthcoming as they are able to get the plans and permits together.”
I took my girlfriend there for one of our first dates. She loved the rape (spanish fish lol she looked at me funny too) and the croquetas de pollo. It was a good spot to go dance on the weekends, it was supposed to re open but i wonder why it never happened.
I love Trader Vic’s at the Shamrock. Now, I never paid for any meal since I was a sales guy back then but the food was exceptional and the drinks?
One time I was entertaining some lawyers and one of the Chinese Ovens caught fire. It was shooting flames like a Bessemer furnace. 3 or 4 cooks came in and just started running around the oven. One of the attorney’s asked if we should leave. I replied, we are actually witnessing a real Chinese fire drill, why leave? Then the Chef, who was Thai, came in and poured a quart of cream in the oven. End of fire.
My wife said “you know, grease fires like that usually get into the vents”. She worked at Old San Francisco Steak House and seen them too. One of the cooks came in, looked up and mouth dropped. I started to leave my seat just as the HFD arrived. They put it out.
We continued to eat and drink with no further disturbances.
The Indonesian Lamb Rack remains the best lamb I’ve ever had.
I loved a lot of the drinks at Trader Vic’s. I especially liked the “Suffering Bastard.” It wasn’t so much that they tasted any better than the others, I just liked ordering them.
Sorry if it has been posted already but there was a delicious couscous Marocan restaurant where you entered a “tent” like being in the sahara, eat on the floor with your hands and belly dancers. The last time I was there in the early 90’s, right there in front of us was Billy Gibbons from ZZTOP. We all had a great time.
I think I know the place you are talking about. Was it Aladdins?
Don’t judge too harshly, but back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Elan’s on St. James was one of the better restaurants in town. Once you got past the backgammon tables and disco dance floor, the food was terrific! My out of town clients loved it….great food and they got to pretend they were cool after dinner and a few too many drinks.
You know you are probably right. I went on their website but it says since 2006. Maybe they reopened? I did not see the indoor tent like decor though.

I am late to this party but sampling CFS around Houston is a hobby of mine. Here are my favorites:
-
it’s pricey but Killen’s Steakhouse in Pearland is hands down the best I have ever had.
-
Longhorn Cafe (Downtown) - closed down but I wanted to pay tribute
-
Mel’s Country Cafe in Tomball
-
Goodson’s Tomball
5a) Willie’s. (with some reservation because the last time I went the location I visited had changed the breading - which if we are being honest is the best part)
5b) Farmhouse Cafe in Huntsville
Barbecue Inn. There are some a tad better, but great old time atmosphere. A newer one is Hughies’s….Vietnamese/American with great beer selection.
Actually in West U, in the Bellaire Blvd/Weslayan/Stella Link triangle. Across Bellaire from the A&W.
Drop off? Pick up?..Luxury! I had to pedal!
