Now that we are in the Big 12, adding women’s gymnastics should be a no brainer, given the talent in the region, the lack of a current D1 program, the fact that Shannon Miller is an alum, and the potential of having Simone Biles involved.
But…we would need to add a men’s sport.
And it ought to be wrestling.
Why?
Because consider what a POWERHOUSE wrestling conference the Big 12 is. Check this out!
We’d be in a wrestling conference with Okie State and Iowa State. OU would probably remain an affiliate member in the sport. That’s three of the top programs, together with powerhouse Mizzou, which is also an affiliate in that sport.
I think Melcher (which is now Garrison?) gym had a bunch of renovations done. I snuck around there during COVID and there were a bunch of office like rooms. The swimming pool should be filled up again, probably will check it out soon.
UH had a wrestling club. Wrestling didn’t exist in Texas 20 years ago and now it is in every high school and getting more respectable. But as my Michigan and Ohio wrestling friends say, it is still ‘Texas’ wrestling.
As for the debt of the athletic department. Athletics in NCAA is supposed to be an opportunity for thousands and thousands to earn a degree. It is supposed to show the university’s diversity. Along the way it, men’s football and basketball, it became a billion dollar business for those sports.
I would like to see more Olympic sports at UH giving opportunities for young athletes.
