Why UH should add women's gymnastics...AND wrestling!

Now that we are in the Big 12, adding women’s gymnastics should be a no brainer, given the talent in the region, the lack of a current D1 program, the fact that Shannon Miller is an alum, and the potential of having Simone Biles involved.

But…we would need to add a men’s sport.

And it ought to be wrestling.

Why?

Because consider what a POWERHOUSE wrestling conference the Big 12 is. Check this out!

We’d be in a wrestling conference with Okie State and Iowa State. OU would probably remain an affiliate member in the sport. That’s three of the top programs, together with powerhouse Mizzou, which is also an affiliate in that sport.

Again…NO BRAINER!!!

I have no problem with adding women’s gymnastics.

I have always been in favor of adding a previously eliminated men’s team. Like swimming.

I find college wrestling kind of creepy. Men touching each other in that manner is weird. I know it has been activity for thousands of years.

I know I will be called out for it. It is what it is.

Not until we are getting full shares, have upgraded the football stadium and football ops and have aligned student fees with similar programs.

I’d swap out wrestling for men’s soccer or hockey (if enough buzz is created with the club team, which it seems to be doing so)

Rugby seems to be big among students. See them playing it alot on the intermeral fields. Add gynastics for Woman and maybe Rugby for the men .

You should probably pay for it

Rugby isn’t an NCAA sponsored sport.

Men’s hockey is considered to be one of the most expensive varsity sports to add.

You need to build an ice rink, pay for a lot of equipment, get a Zamboni, maintain the ice, etc.

Even Illinois gave up trying to stand up a varsity men’s hockey team.

All wrestling requires, by contrast, is a few coaches, a few mats, and some uniforms. No new infrastructure required.

Rooms in Melcher could be repurposed as wrestling practice rooms.

All gymnastics would require is a coach or two, uniforms, and the appartuses.

Well guess if you UH adds Woman’s Gymnastics then it would either be adding wrestling or men’s soccer.

+1 for women’s wrestling

I think Melcher (which is now Garrison?) gym had a bunch of renovations done. I snuck around there during COVID and there were a bunch of office like rooms. The swimming pool should be filled up again, probably will check it out soon.

Let the dept get out of debt before we start adding non revenue sports.

Here’s an article on the potential for gymnastics in Texas. Lots of Texas gymnasts leave the state, but wish they could stay.

I read recently that Simone Biles would be interested in coaching at UH if we added gymnastics.

No wrestling!!!

The Big 12 doesn’t sponsor men’s soccer, so you can all forget about that one.

OTOH….it’s a powerhouse in WRESTLING.

The Big 12 and B1G are essentially the “P2” of that sport.

UH had a wrestling club. Wrestling didn’t exist in Texas 20 years ago and now it is in every high school and getting more respectable. But as my Michigan and Ohio wrestling friends say, it is still ‘Texas’ wrestling.

As for the debt of the athletic department. Athletics in NCAA is supposed to be an opportunity for thousands and thousands to earn a degree. It is supposed to show the university’s diversity. Along the way it, men’s football and basketball, it became a billion dollar business for those sports.

I would like to see more Olympic sports at UH giving opportunities for young athletes.

It doesn’t get talked about very often, but we really do have a world-class swimming facility.

There are some really talented male athletes in the Houston area that train here year round and then head elsewhere to swim for other schools.

I’m for women’s gymnastics and men’s swimming

What is up with y’all and women’s gymnastics?

If you want to see college girls in tights, just go to the volleyball games or track meets.
