I like grumpy old men with a win percentage of .709. And multiple top 10 teams
P.S. he can sing and play guitar not bad for a grumpy old man.

Maybe he should take his singing on the road. Might be able to book Billy Bobâs.
As for coaching, I think heâs lost his fire. You donât give up mid season. Once you lose it, itâs hard to get the mojo back
If he is a grumpy old winner for us then cool. If he is a grumpy old loser for us then, well you have another CDH and more misery. No thanks.
Donât take this the wrong way, but nobody cares what you think. What matters is what recruits and transfers think.
If Patterson thinks he has the fire in his belly and the stamina to go out and convince 19 and 20 year olds or older, to transfer here and to negotiate with NIL deals, then great. I am thinking he doesnât, based on his last few years at TCU.
I just think a lot of these older coaches are not happy about the player empowerment era and that is why so many have quit. Patterson seemed to fit this bill. Of course he will say he can do it, but the proof is in the pudding. Unfortunately we as a program donât have the luxury of hoping he finds out.
I asked a well connected TCU alum about Patterson and UH.
Q: Patterson getting some run as potential replacement for holgo. Thoughts?
A: He and Tillman wouldnât get along
Q: Does he have anything left in the tank?
A: I think so
Iâd only bring Patterson in as a DC.
We do NOT need anther âGrumpâ as HC at the University of HoustonâŠNo Thank You!!
That will drive away what little fans we have left.
We need someone we can get behind.
Iâve lived through the Jimy Willaims era with the AstrosâŠthe Bill OâBrien era with the TexansâŠthe Arrogant Grump CDH here with the Coogs.
THIS job is about so much more than Wâs and LâsâŠwe have to CONNECT with apathetic fans, alums and city.
No Grumpy!!
Make Traylor the HC, to set Culture and to CONNECT.
Hire Patterson as his DCâŠhe can be as grumpy as he wants since he will not be THE figurehead of our program.
I doubt GP would take a DC position. Heâs not hurting for a paycheck and heâs got too big of an ego. He wonât play second fiddle to anybody. Thereâs a statue of him in Ft Worth for God sakes.
No disrespect, but I donât think you have any idea how all that works. The coaches are not negotiating NIL deals. Thatâs actually not allowed. The HC also doesnât go out on the road leading the in house recruiting efforts either. They are expected to close guys at times but you probably shouldnât worry about his about do that. Gary is a very charismatic guy in that setting and will have no issue winning over momâs and dads as needed, and illustrating his track record for sending 3-star recruits to the NFL. Hiring a coach from UTSA is like hiring the head coach from Southlake Carroll or AledoâŠhell those HS programs are a bigger operation that UTSA. Running a B12 football program well isnât for rookies.
Then a HARD NO on another Grumpy A-Hole Coach that struggles to connect with our fan base.
DC or NOTHING!
I donât typically agree with you, but I do agree that the next HC must connect with the fanbase. Itâs finicky enough as is.
The question I have for Patterson in terms of passion and drive is this, âDo you have the drive and passion to not only coach and recruit (I think he does) but to go out make appearances, hustle on campus and build the brand not only through the on the field product?â
Because if he doesnât have that he wonât be as successful as weâd like him to be, and might be a deal breaker.
Patterson is too good a coach to report to a G5 coach, one year removed. Its head coach or bust with Patterson at UH.
Excerpt from the tenured professor interrupting the grad studentâs MANA 101 lecture.
No disrespect, but you appear not to be aware that HCs have been negotiating âunder the tableâ deals with recruits since the 50âs. Whatâs changed now is the leverage is in the hands of the recruits. Gary, Dabo & others are having problems dealing with it.
The leverage was always in the hands of HS recruits.
Remember when long time legend Romeo Cronell reported to rookie DC, Mike Vrable, with the Texans.
Will be a similar mentor- mentee arrangement with half the stress for GPâŠ
He can just coach as the DCâŠwouldnât have to worry about the rest!
At the end of the day, our choice will likely be one of:
I wonât be shocked if itâs a coach nobody expected and the board goes ballistic.
Disagree. Most head coaches relied on alums to get the dirty work done
I donât think Kliff is a serious candidate. If heâs interviewed its to mollify a segment of our boosters.
