I thought he kinda wanted to distance himself from the cheating scandal.
Maybe played a part as well?

Being in the Northeast helped in terms of where he ended up signing, but he was never going to resign with Houston and that is tied directly to how they manipulated his service time and attempted to to lure him in with a Jon Singleton type deal. I used to play slow pitch softball with Springer’s brother in law.
What? Can you provide any links to back this up? Springer was going to command a certain dollar amount on the open market. Our 2021 adjusted salary was at $190mm. Bregman and Altuve’s contracts kicked in the same season as Springer’s final year of his contract. They knew they had replacement level or even higher with Tucker so as tough as it was to let a fan favorite go, there was no indication that Springer was treated poorly or that the Astros weren’t interested in retaining him.
Additionally, Springer’s Super 2 clock started in the middle of 2014 in his age 24 season and the labor contract then allowed the Astros to keep him under arbitration control until he was 30.
It was best for Springer to play for the highest bidder considering his free agency started late in his career. He got $150mm. Good for him.
He still got paid in his 3,4,5 arbitration years at 12mm, 12mm, and 21mm. The Astros manipulated the system for long term control, but it’s not like they were paying him pennies on the dollar for his services.
I’m in the Espada corner, but wouldn’t balk at Bannister. I’m sure Bagwell’s list of potential head coaches looks something like this…

I think Baggie is taking way too much cra p for being Jim Crane’s advisor. Maybe because he’s my favorite Astro of all-time. Ha There’s no way he’s interested in the manager’s job. Even if he was, he has zero chance.
I like him, too. I just don’t see what expertise he brings to talent evaluation. These are jobs for full-time baseball guys. Bringing in guys off the beach and golf course to tell you who to trade is risky, IMO.
I think heard that his wife’s family is from Buffalo, which is not too far from Toronto. I know Chandler Rome made an article about the Astros manipulating his service time but Chandler always makes articles like that to stir the pot.
Yeah, I don’t think Baggy wants to be the manager.
That punk-asss is always trying to be provocative. If any one little man represents the death of American sports journalism its that putz
I just can’t believe we’re at a point where we have to worry about what Bagwell wants.
Much as I love Spring, Stros were 100% right to let him walk in hindsight. 2016-2019 GS was top shelf but look at his numbers since, he’s basically a 20/60/,265 player on the downside now and their stuck with that big contract
The big contracts in the middle of their careers don’t look that great. How do you make that work out for your club barring endless WS?
I would deal these mofos long before that becomes an issue.
There are exceptions but not many
Altuve is a lifer and I hope Bregman is as well……a little early but I think Yordan might be.
We’ve already discussed dealing Tucker.
If Jim Crane would let us ( main posters on the baseball board) make all the player decisions the team would be in great hands.
We would have to take votes on some things of course but I think we could come up with a consensus on most occasions.
Obviously I’m living in make believe world here but I’m totally serious about our ability regarding player decisions from free agency to trades to the minor league system.
As disappointed as fans all are about the Astros season, they were only two games away from being in the WS. Two freaking games!
IMO, wholesale changes are not required, but changes are required to be successful next season and beyond. My inclination is that the Astros are in a slow state of decline after 6-7 years of success and dominance. It pains me to admit that to be the case. I want the thrill ride to continue.
On the horizon is a young, talented Rangers team who are on the cusp of great success. What do the Astros need to confront the changing tide of the AL West and AL overall?
My wish, foolish as it may be, is for Crane to bring Luhnow back as GM. Yeah, I know. Not going to happen, but he was the architect of building the franchise to where it is today. I wonder if Crane has given it serious thought, but pride is standing in the way.
Manager wise, no need for major change. Hire Espada. Maintain the continuity. Maybe the team needs a new pitching and batting coach. Maybe.
Positionally, they need another OFer with pop and didn’t sign one. Figure out what happened to Tucker? He was uncharacteristically a no show during the playoffs. Was he distracted by personal issues, possibly an undisclosed injury, or just bad slump timing. Perhaps it’s time for a trade, but I would certainly weigh the loss of those 112 RBI.
The infield is set, but I’m hoping Peña is not a one year wonder. If Abreu remains healthy, he’ll be an asset next year. Sign a FA catcher, or promote from within. I like Maldy as a coach.
Dusty’s proclivity to rely on veterans with no pop backfired (Maldy, Singleton, Meyers) was a detriment. Hopefully the new coach will not have starting lineup biases.
They thought they were set at SP, but it backfired. Injuries to pitching staff were clearly a factor, but the franchise cannot rely on McCullars to remain healthy. Not sure about Garcia. What happen to Valdez and Javier in the Ranger series? Fatigue? Lacking confidence? Sign one or two SP. If another SP or two become injured next season, the results will be the same. RP is set. Release Stanek.
Astros need to get younger. The young, talented Rangers roster is impressive. Astros desperately need to rebuild their minor league roster.
Figure out why the team suddenly can’t win at home. That was the biggest disappointment.
What is MMP missing that the Rangers stadium has?
Again, wholesale changes are not required and FAcy will resolve most of the current deficiencies, but they need to figure it out while incorporating contingencies for risk management, which in the case of the past season, they didn’t address satisfactorily.
Go ‘Stros!
Agree with most but I don’t think we need Maldy in any capacity. He comes from a system where the pitcher selects the catcher. We need to get as far from that as possible. You need a manager that tells the players who’s playing and not players weedling bad organizational habits.
Good point, but I believe Maldy has management potential. If he’s agreeable, send him to the minors. If he wants to remain a catcher, then don’t resign him.
Anyone heard of interviews being set up?
Big JC said he wanted it done quickly.
