We have 3 major needs as far as coaches go. We need a DC. I would prefer one that calls an unpredictable game thus forcing our opponents into making mistakes. we also need a good special teams coach. One that can teach our players how to cover kickoffs and punts and teach our return specialist when to fair catch and when to try and return. Finally we need a top notch S&C coach. I was very disappointed that our players were the ones that were gassed in the 4th quarter and not our opponents.
I think a turnover oriented scheme is probably best to pair with our offense specifically because it creates quantity of possessions. In the NFL, they have the rule of 53, meaning if you have 53 combined rushes and pass completions in a game, you’re likely to win. That number is probably different in college, but the principle holds true. As Briles gains experience, and as we will always have college kids on the field, there is a certain rate of play failure we can expect. Creating turnovers transforms an opponent’s scoring opportunity into one for us. Certainly this is true no matter the offense, but a Briles offense is predicated on quantity over quality, so anything that improves quantity is beneficial.
I totally agree on the need to create turn overs. I would hope that by forcing confusion in the opponents offense would give us the opportunity to create those turnovers. A return of turn over Tuesday would also be a good thing.
I mentioned this in another thread. I have a sports agent friend, who says he heard that we are working on a 3 year deal with Gibbs. I have no idea how reliable the rumor is.
So, under Gibbs, we were 20th in Points Allowed in 2013, and 11th in 2014. I understand he wouldn’t have the defensive talent next year that he had those years, but, my gosh, if they could even rank in the top half of teams in scoring defense next year, that would be an incredible improvement.
