16 Team Playoff with 10 Auto-bids

The only thing I ever said that might have anything to do with ratings is that I would watch an actual playoff. Right now I don’t because it means nothing. It’s an invitational just like the baseball tournament at Minute Maid we play in every year or the basketball tournament we just won in Hawaii.

Of course I don’t believe the nonsense that they posted on their website. Their website statements are for public consumption. The CFP is a business and its charges are to ensure that the 1984 BYU championship situation never repeats under their watch and to maximize profits for its primary stakeholders. Fairness and what’s best for all is not part of their private mission statement. There are a lot of smart people making calculated decisions on behalf of those that they are responsible for. This is about money and money rules everything around us. The G5 moniker was created to maximize the value of the select few because someone has to be on the bottom and consumers will continue to consume the CFP product no matter how exclusive or prohibitive it may be; People just want to be entertained. The CFP is a multi-billion dollar business and it won’t be disrupted unless its financially warranted. Those smart calculating people will try to get away with as much as they can while doing just enough to keep the less fortunate quiet.

Thank you for this! A while back I made a statement stating the “P5” designation was made up, and someone said it wasn’t; P5 was pertaining to which 5 conferences have their own media rights, or something like that.

Ad nauseam, P5 and G5 terms are ALWAYS (I repeat, always) brought up in reference to some pretentious sense! How people continue to ignore the context clues is way beyond me. I’m waiting for the day when a guest is interviewed on air and they ask a show host, “well, what do you mean by P5/G5”, because it has yet to be done.

The selfish version of the Golden Rule is that he who has the gold, rules. The media controls the P5/G5 narrative because they benefit from it and if an on air guest were to question its validity, it would probably be brushed aside to prevent any public opposition from gaining any momentum. Originally, the classification was supposed to pertain only to the CFP but every year the term is being used on a more frequent basis in NCAA Div I basketball and its even crept into NCAA Track and Field discussions. I suppose this was because UH made a serious run at the outdoor national championship last year.

I heard a commentator recently on one of our games mention G5. lol I was thinking, “well sorry to break it to ya buddy but the tournament is open to all”.

Real basketball people call it the major 7 (P5 + Big East and AAC).

On the court performance, yes but we need an AAC men’s team to win a national championship. If that were to happen, then our financial valuation should be higher than the Big East because of our success in football.

Actually, I’ve heard Dana tell a reporter that he’s been at Power5 programs and now that he’s at UofH he can’t tell the difference. Of course we are not a normal Group5 school as most programs don’t have the facilities and stadium for comparison. We do. Not to mention UofH is a Carnegie designated Tier1 research university.

UConn did in 2014 while in the AAC. I know they are leaving, but still counts for the conference.

For me, it doesn’t have to do with them leaving, but that the championship team was developed while they were in the old Big East and even though the AAC gets to hang the banner, I don’t believe we get full credit for it. If UCONN, our blueblood, would have continued their success while in the AAC, along with what the other schools are now doing, then it would probably be perceived differently today…but that’s my personal opinion.

Based on how we got our butts handed to us within conference this year, I’m sure he can’t tell the difference. Dana has a plethora of tools and resources available at his disposal to be successful at UH but other G5 schools are trying to do the same. It’s probably only a matter of time before this gap closes and perhaps someone is better informed than me, but I don’t foresee our administration investing in the proposed football operations center if we can’t win with the facilities advantages that we currently have. There’s no sense in spending money to have the fastest car on the track if you can’t drive it. Let’s hope Dana is successful in building a sustainable winning program.

It’s the philosophy “if you build it, they will come”. How many recruits would we have lost if we did not upgrade our locker rooms or have the IPF?

I think that UConn team losing to James Dickey is more of a reason it doesn’t count!

Regarding the kid logic.

Yes some parents are worried about health issues and those children will remain out of the sport, but there are others who may live in a G5 region of the country and experience lost interest as their child’s favorite team never sniffs more than a lawn mower bowl game. New regions of the nation experiencing success in the playoffs would renew interest in the sport in those areas. People are drawn towards success. Success breeds growth.

The Titans were considered the “Sisters of the poor” for this year’s NFL playoffs. They finished with a 9-7 record. Hardly a record that would have indicated the following.
The NFL has 12 Teams (including the wild card game)
So far the Titans (loath them due to their Oilers affiliation) have beaten the Patriots and Ravens.
Nobody but nobody gave them a chance to beat either Team.
The same logic applies when a low so called seed plays against a so called major P5 School.
On any given day anything can happen. This is why they play the game. This ridiculous explanation of a Northern Illinois getting whacked by a Clemson or Alabama is just that.
By definition nobody knows the outcome of a game before it starts. They might very well getting whacked but at least they have to play.
Just as Corinthcoog pointed out the excitement in that part of America would be huge. Chicago would likely embrace them. The same can be said for how many Schools winning their conference?
Football is on a slippery slope and the cfp is excluding most of America? What does that tell you of the real intent of the cfp?

They really need to do something at the FCS level. So boring to always have the same two teams in the championship.

Chicago hasn’t embraced Nowthwestern or Illinois, what makes you think they’ll embrace Northern Illinois?

North Dakota state is the UT of that state so their basically a FBS school acting like a fcs.

James Madison has 30k students also and is doing the same. Rather be big fish in small pond

When was the last time that Northwestern was on the “national pedestal”?
1995 and yes they were highly supported by the entire state and were greatly supported by the entire country. Northwestern was on ESPN almost daily. Northwestern symbolized a great School accomplishing a momentous job on the football field.
You put NIU in the cfp you can be sure that they will be highly supported. They just need to be given the chance. You and I won’t know the answer to your/my point until they are given a chance. You choose to arbitrarily exclude Schools on a bia argument. You 100% discount the probability, even if it is small that they could beat a major powerhouse. When you arbitrarily choose one School over another that so called Championship is no longer valid. The field and only the field has the answer.

I really like this proposal. ESPN’s plan has just about destroyed the bowl games. Remember when New Year’s Day was all about watching 4 major bowls? Started with the Cotton and Sugar BowIs followed by the Rose Bowl and finishing with the Orange Bowl. Towards the end, the Sugar Bowl moved to New Years Eve and that conflicted with New Year’s parties. Anyone else miss the Bluebonnet Bowl? Helped put UH on the map. I didn’t watch half of them this year. Also noting the number of meaningless bowls that have sprung up. Sadly ESPN isn’t likely to just give up the arrangement they have created. Sad.
