I said WIN a National Championship…not make a one and done appearance
Got to remembered Papi Chulo that the College Football Playoff is 12 teams now. With Transfer Portal and the NIL is so much more feasible and realistic that UH can make the playoff field. Coaching plays a big part more than ever imo.
Then I STILL disagree because here were Michigan’s previous five classes according to 247:
2023: 20
2022: 12
2021: 13
2020: 12
2019: 10

Again…YOU DON’T HAVE TO CONSISTENTLY HAVE A TOP 5 RECRUITING CLASS TO WIN A NATTY.
Michigan sure as Hell didn’t!
Shows you the power of stealing signs. ![]()
…and having several Top 10 recruiting classes!
Michigan only had one in the last five.
Same deal.
And until last season, Michigan hadn’t sniffed a title game in what, 30 years?
That’s more natties than aTm had seen with the highest rated class in history!
OK so conversely, show me the last national championship football team that had a 5 year average class ranking of #25 to #35 (which is about the most optimistic and best case scenario for UH football.)
[HINT: It’s probably never happened and will likely never happen in the future either.]
You may be right on that, but that’s not the issue before this court.
The issue before this court is whether you have to consistently recruit in the Top 5 to win natties.
If you look at Clemson’s classes in the years leading up to their 2016 and 2018 natties, the answer is no.
I think that is right. So you most likely need to have top 20 classes combined with some excellent coaching - especially in the new NIL era.
Top 20 seems about right.
Top 20 with good portal classes. Michigan did a good job adding key positions from the portal especially on the OL.
That’s a valid point. But, the transfer portal is a great equalizer. What good is a perpetual top-5 class when over half of them transfer out every year? You could be like Kentucky is basketball (perpetual top five classes no title.) The 12 team CFP is also going top be an equalizer. With that, you don’t have to win your conference and still make the playoff. It’s a whole new world now.
It’s amazing how Coach Fritz and staff were able to salvage this recruiting class. Not one of us thought we would be top 75 after Dana was canned let alone top 50
How the past month’s successes have unfolded tells us a lot, and I will leave it at that.
Fritz basically tied Hogy’s best effort (2022 @#48 rank) in just a few weeks of recruiting. Can’t wait to see how 2024 shakes out! ![]()
Incredible what a real, competent, HC is capable of
What is most impressive about what Fritz’s has done in the 2 months he has been here is …… 15 out of the 18 transfers we have signed were starters. While only 8 of the 20 transfers we got last year were starters. You can clearly tell the difference in philosophy recruiting wise. Fritz’s wants guys who have proven themselves. Dana can’t even get those guys to visit.
That is a really good point.
