UTSA is next to last in the AAC rankings. However, their average recruit rankings are third behind Tulane and Tulsa. (SMU already grouped with ACC.) UTSA only has ten commitments. Maybe urban schools take fewer from high school knowing that they can recruit from the portal.
Kansas State only has 10 commits and they won the Big 12 last year, Utah and Colorado have 10 commits. I donāt know if local area matters too much, itās just on the coaches whether they want to fill in the class early or not.
Some do it early, some later. What matters is the end result.
The biggest high school game in the state & UH had zero presence at the Desoto/Duncanville game. This morning, the star of the game (a relatively low recruited) 4 star WR commits to SMU. We have no presence in DFW & kids here actually want to come to Houston. Desotoās ā25 class is probably best in state & is flying under the radarā¦we could really get some talent there & other schools here in the city with more effort. Weāre not talking lack of NIL or collectives, these kids arenāt even being recruited at all.
Since UH needs players ready NOW, donāt look for many high school recruit signings. I think the resources are being devoted to JUCOs and the transfer portal. CDH has said as much. And to further that strategy, some of the performances of certain positions need an upgrade in talent. Its where the program is now.
If CDH focused mostly on high school kids, he may get a few 4 s, but history tells us mostly 3 s, and UH would not be competitive until those kids, assuming they pan out, get experience, and by that time, CDH will be long gone from the program.
The transfer portal these days is where all the Houston kids see the grass is not greener and come back home. It almost does the recruiting for you knowing these good athletes want to play and Houston is the best place to come home to. But we have to have the NIL these days to make it work, it is a different ball game.
Iām fine with the portal for a good chunk of the team, but would still feel better if we had 12-13 high school recruits. I do like that Dana goes after guy with multiple years of eligibility in the portal. Manjack, Brown, Hypolite, Stephon Johnson, Coley, and others are basically high school recruits anyway with all of them coming in with 3 or 4 years of eligibility. It doesnāt seem like many of our transfers have been 1 year guys.
My next concern is we could win in the AAC by getting guys from Big 12 or PAC schools that arenāt playing, but I donāt see that being a winning formula now that we are in a P5. We should get more G5 all-conference types (like Marcus Jones).
You are so right, DFW has for years produced many a Coog player. South Dallas especially, not so much in the Planoās and Allenās. Itās sad that DFW is not recruited, Tune came from Carrollton.
This. Russey type guys come to mind. I donāt think we are going to be getting starting caliber linemen (what we need) from the portal. Why would we want a guy who couldnāt start at another P4 school?
The portal helps your back, strengthens your bones and joints, and helps you sleep, making you feel refreshed. Hell, it took two strokes off my golf game.
Do what Dana did. Get the portal today. #OrderThePortal
