Season Opening Opponent:
Minnesota Golden Gophers has won 3 College World Series Titles (1956, 1960, 1964).
Minnesota was amongst the earliest college baseball powerhouses, as Dick Siebert led the Gophers to three titles between 1956 and 1964. Perhaps the most memorable was the 1960 three-game series against USC. Game 1 witnessed the largest comeback in MCWS history as the Gophers came back from down 11-2 to win 12-11 in the 10th, while both Game 2 and Game 3 went to extra innings, as the Gophers downed the Trojans 2-1 in the 10th on a bases-loaded walk in the finale.

Just got approval from my domestic supervisor to go to this one. It’s a long drive from PNW, but I’ll be at the Saturday and Sunday games with my brother and the kids.

Nevermind, I looked it up.
The only one is Minnesota (Winfield and Molitor) UNLESS you count the high school level boarding school associated with Notre Dame, in which case they would be the other (Cap Anson and Carl Yastrzemski). However, as I understand it, Yaz went to ND on a BASKETBALL scholarship; not sure he even played baseball there, so it seems that Minnesota would be in UNIQUE company.
Edit: OK, it appears that Yaz played on the FRESHMAN baseball team at ND. So if we count that, and the ND HS, then ND might arguably be the only other school with two members of the 3000 hit club.
Minnesota is one of the worst programs in College Baseball. They their own stadium, which is outside, but play most of their early home games at US Bank Stadium, where the Vikings play… Cold baseball sucks, but baseball up there in February and March would be crazy cold. They do have a couple of pretty good players, according to D1baseball.com, but UH has way more talent. Anything less than a sweep would be a huge disappointment for the team. We know how these series have ended up, though, in the last five years or so.

Lost me after your first sentence. They are not even close to being one of the worst programs in baseball.
They finished last year @ 120 in RPI and had no quad 1 victories….and 6-9 in quad 2.
So no, they are not a dreg I guess……but definitely one of the worst of the P4 schools……tons of non-p4’s miles better than Minnesota.

My comment meant to say they are one of the worst P4 schools in the country. Obviously, there are many lower tier programs that are worse.

The Gophers have fallen off and struggled since their last conference championship in 2018 and sure that’s what’s relevant to the present. But they do have an impressive program from a historical perspective and that’s noteworthy. To me anyway.
We follow up with road games at UT and Oregon St. midweek and then on the road for a series with a good Cal Bears team…so IMO the early schedule is sufficiently challenging.
